my friend's car won't start. we tried to jump start it but that didn't work. we tried putting in a brand new battery and that still didn't work.
we think the starter might be bad.
have any of you guys ever replaced your starter because it just died on you?
if so, how many miles were on your car?
thanks in advance.

Does it crank? If not, the main relay won't keep it from cranking.

I tryed to replace it just last week. I got all the bolts off except for one. Its gonna be a real pain in the ass to get that bolt out. Its like right underneath the intake manifold, what makes it even worse is you cant see it. You have to feel around for it. Heres the link to my post I posted last week. http://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=148564

I have 95 M3 with 99,895 miles. I purchased a factory rebuilt starter for $109 and a shop put it in for $100.
I attempted to do the install myself, but in trying to take the manifold off...I couldn't get the last nut off closest to the firewall. So, I put everything back and let the shop do it. He got it off with different extensions and swivle tools.
Not real difficult, but it wasn't worth my time and effert for a labor charge of $100.

My friend had his done for like just under 400...
the starter bolts are a PAIN IN THE ASS to get to. and you may have to lower the transmission to get to the top one.
The two jobs that I would pay someone else to do that are in my capabilities: starter replacement, and heater core replacement.
