Wife just got her new iPhone and would like to play music from it in her car, an 07 335i convertible. The phone hooked right up using bluetooth and that part works great. Is there a way to connect it to the radio?

Thanks for any guidance on this.

You need an iPod cable to hook it up. Or you could go out and buy a wire that will connect it to your radio like an "iTrip" or something along those lines.

Thanks Maxpain, I guess it's time to open the manual as I have no idea where the cable you refer to would plug in!

Edit: I found the "Aux In" jack but according to the manual for an iPod to hook in you need to plug into both the Aux In and the USB Port. Her car only has the Aux In for some reason.. Seems like it will accept the input but won't show a playlist or anything. Have to find a cable now to try it.

If I'm not mistaken I think the playlist and everything will show through the radio screen. Best of luck finding the cable!

It will but only (according to the manual) if you plug into both the 1/8" AND the USB jacks. I assume the 1/8" carries the music itself and the USB carries the data but that's just a guess. From my searches it appears I can have the double jack (USB+1/8") installed at a dealer so I will look into that also.. Now where to find the cable!

According to Apple:

Question: Where can I purchase the BMW iPod Adapter and how much does it cost?
Answer: You should contact your BMW dealership for information regarding cost of the BMW iPod Adapter and installation cost.

As much as I despise my local dealer I will see what is available. For now all I need is an 1/8" stereo cable (male on both ends) and it should play through the AUX selection on the radio. If I get the USB adapter installed the USB cable is available at the Apple Store for $20.

The part you need is 61120440812. Do not purchase part number 61120440796 because although it looks the same, it will not charge your iPhone (it uses FireWire charging, which was dropped from the iPhone as of the 3GS I believe).

Dont quote me on this but I think the option for the iPod USB and Aux in plus is option 6FL and that has to be ordered from the BMW factory and is not available as an aftermarket option.

And you are right as far as the Aux input goes. It will play the music, but you cant see the playlists or anything else on the nav screen (or radio dock if you dont have nav) and you also cant use the steering wheel controls to change the iPod. YOu have to change it directly on the iPod.

Really want to trade my '08 and get a '11 335 so that I can play music through A2DP (Bluetooth) from my iPhone 4 :)

I just picked up a 2011 335is this past weekend and had the IPhone option included. I tried to connect my new IPhone and although it could see the device, it could not read it. My wife's older IPhone worked fine. My point here is that even if you buy the full IPhone adapter, I do not think the BMW software is able to see it yet. I asked the dealership about it and am waiting to hear back. My guess is that a software update will be needed.

Do you have the iPhone 4 or the 3GS?

Even my 3G iPhone won't play through the iDrive in my '08. I just use a normal iPod for the car with the factory ipod adapter.

Not sure which system you have, but mine is a 2009 with Logic7 / iDrive and mine works perfect. I used to have a 3GS and recently upgraded to iPhone4 - both units work fine. In fact, the iPhone4 seems to have zero problems connecting or maintaining the connection, whereas the 3GS would occasionally drop the the iPod connection and I would have to reset the phone before it would connect. But so far, no problems at all with IP4, both bluetooth connectivity and iPod connectivity working perfectly. I am using the BMW Y-cable that came with the vehicle and it's plugged in the center console ports. If you have those two ports in the center console, then the BMW Y-cable is what you need.

Thats odd, I have a 3GS and I plug it in and it says something along the lines of "this accessory is not supported/optimized for iPhone" but I just press okay and it works fine anyway. Only problem I really have is sometimes it just does not want to charge.

I recommend finding the cable with the ipod dock connector to 1/8 plug. If you use the headphone out on the ipod, the output level is controlled by the phone's volume control. If you go out the dock conector, its line level (phone volume doesn't matter). You can find some inexpensive cables like this on the web. This may not sound like a big deal, but when she has the phone volume way down, and cranks the car stereo all the way up to compensate... and then changes over to the radio or CD... BLAAAAAM! blown speakers, blown eardrums, etc.

Also - I'm in the same boat... my 07 was built before the 6FL (USB option) was standard. So I bought a proclip mount (www.proclipusa) that sits to the right of the shift knob, and that way the ipod controls are within easy reach.

I prefer the "dock to 3.5mm" connection too. I'm doing that currently for my I-Pod Classic 80GB using a 3rd party cable I bought on Amazon, and works great. However, that cable doesn't work with the I-phone4 (actually, neither does the 3rd party car charger that works with the IPod). Would love to find an alternate cable. Evidently there are subtle differences between the different Apple gadgets.

A2DP is still not available on these cars as of 2011 models. Maybe they will add it on the F30.

Hmmm, maybe it is an iDrive only feature!! I certainly do not have it and I have BT.
