bmw 1994 540i rough idle, check engine light

about a week ago while i was driving in the city on a 30km/h speed limit my car started to to idle really rough. the next morning when i drove it it had a hard time accelerating and was still running really rough, after about 3 or 4 stop signs/red lights it started to clear up. but every time it sits for a few hours it gets this problem. does anyone know what this is. and the check engine light has been on for about a week straight. thanks

Do stomp test, if nothing comes up check for cracks within intake boot, clean your icv, check your maf, check your o2 sensors, check your ignition coils, ignition boots, spark plugs, throttle position sensor, air intake temperature sensor, catalytic converters then run a smoke test.
