View Full Version : LED Headlight Bulbs?

Was looking around for HID kits, and found LED kits, 25 leds fitted to an H1 assembly.
It was a bit vague but i assume these bulbs are very bright, however the projected light totally sucks? So really only any good for DRL or parking lights etc?

I have heard that LEDs are coming a long way in terms of being usable for headlights etc. The new Audis with their DRL strips are wicked bright. That said, I don't think the intensity is there to make them anywhere as good as HIDs, in my humble opinion. I just use LEDs for park, licence and interior lighting.

dibs on the diesel if it kills you!

the diesel is dead :S
yer apparently the latest led lights have substantial back cooling, somehting these chinese bulbs dont....

Is the diesel dead, or dead and gone? Always wanted to see what the diesel exhaust manifold looked like...

If you get them and they work I'll buy a set as well, I saw the led lights on an e38 and it looked cool

And re the diesel, i broke her up in march, made the 525i pretty much free (actually i think it was free)
as for hte manifold, i still got it here, 4 foot from my desk ;) i believe it would go on an m20, not sure about m30's, heres some piccys for y'all :)
clicky for large

just a reminder, turbo was top mount on the diesel, however im sure manifold can be mounted either way
fitted was a mitsibushi turbo, td03-11g i think, and im pretty sure that is a gnats whisker of T3 fitment, ie it would fit withhout any work

That light looks just like the ones they're selling for home lighting. The one I have has that same multi-LED configuration and puts out about like a 40 watt bulb. This thing better have a good reflector behind it. Also there's no heat-sink. I have my doubts.:confused

Got me doubts about this one mate. I might put Dibs on the 525 instead.

if there's a way to verify that manifold would fit an m30 i'd be very interested in seeing what you'd take for it shipped to the states.

well i can take dimensions of the mounting flanges for you, im not doing anything with it :S i never am going to own an m30 or m20 and id love to know about fit on an m30 anyhow :)
ill sketch out some crude dims tomorrow lunchtime and post them here, as for cost, well postage plus beer money is good :)
now to find somone with a spare m30 head to take measurements off :P
ah balls, quick search, m20 and m51 (diesel) share same 91mm cylinder spacing, according to www m30 is 100mm :(

however, you have set me off now :S
lol
heres a link comparing m41/m42/44 flanges
as you can see the manifold wont bolt up stock, however im wondering if it would be easy to weld an m50 flange on it, and reshape the ports a little ;) (cant remember the deal with welding cast, if at all possible) or bolt a flange to it
also in the pics the guy mistakes the EGR feed for an external wastegate, i wonder if that would abe a viable wastegate feed :S
also, im not sure what hte limitations of the manifold are, ie hp wise as the runners are quite small

I have a very strong feeling those won't hold a candle to HIDs.
Could be cool for Highs though if they're brighter than halogens.

Try it out, would be fun to see the outcome!
I wonder when they will produce laser lights that beams up the whole road in front!

I'm pretty sure it won't fit any m30.
But m50 or m52 maybe.. as the m51 is based on the same base as the m50.
I got a complete 525tds touring scrapping around, gonna check it out today how the bolts line on the m51 up vs the m50. Should be about the same, but you never know..

no, dont think the bolts line up a all, but maybe could be made to fit ;)

Ok :) I didn't get my "ruler" in under to the exhaust manifold enough to do any accurate meassuring today when i was checking how far the bolts was from each other. That manifold is really hidden/packed in under that wide leaning head!
Can you check the distance between the bolt holes on yours (horizontally)? I know the m50 manifold is 70mm between the bolts (from the outer edge to outer edge of the bolt holes and 30mm between each pipe).

sure, ill check on monday when im back in work (where the manifold is )

Thanks!
One thing just hit me though, the design of where you bolt it up is nothing like it. The m50 has twice the studs for the manifold compared to the m51.
But i'd like to have the meassurements anyways, to see if one can elaborate with soemthing to make it fit on any other engine :)
uk525td
07-03-2010, 02:18 PM
yer the studs are totally different, however i was thinking one could always make a set of clamps up or something ;)

yep probably right, wasnt thinking anything exotic jsut two long strips of drilled thick steel lol
but seriously, the diesel manifold has kinda rounded square ports, m50 are elongated, ideally youd need to blend the 2 shapes together, so youd want an m50 flange which ive seen for about£40, an ebay manifold isnt too much more than that....

funny as I was just thinking about those audi's and their 10 or so lights per headlight... and yes, some were out. I was wondering what apita that is going to be to fix...

BMW had tested out LED headlights on their Mille Miglia concept coupe (2006). The article said it was quite bright lighting. You can see on the pic there is a very large number of LEDs.

Hm. I thought the manifolds needed the welds beefed up quite a bit? Or are they good to go out of the box?

There's a couple new designs floating about. Search ebay for BMW turbo manifold.
