This does look lovely, but I think $22,800 is a bit rich for an M5, even in this condition. Am I way off base?

Yeah that's a little rich, you're entering E39 territory at 23k. A normal M5 in really good condition with similar milage can fetch 12, maybe 15. It is a Euro with relatively low milage, so it'll still command a decent price. Lower miles (kms) are necessary in order to really pull big bucks with these cars, though. At the moment it's really priced for the "right buyer" but there might be a market at 18+.

Realistic value aside, people really need to quit using this sort of argument. The e34 m5 is a much more rare find than an e39, and already becoming a collectible. Not to mention a lot of the people that are looking for an e34 m5 don't want an e39 m5. Would you expect someone to say "That's pretty expensive for a e30 m3, 16k is entering e46 territory" ? Same principle applies.

Well or you can always get yourself a new honda civic for that money :)
I am not sure if the s38b38 is worth all the extra, but this car sure looks mint. Couple years ago I would've dumped the cash on this baby with my eyes closed. Now I have a family :)

+1000000 for the 500E W124 unbelievable power plant! I wish there were Merc's from that era with manual gearboxes in the US.
The one thing that the W201 190e is missing is to be an Evo 2.

Excellent point. The E34 and E39 M5s are two substantially different animals, the former the last hurrah of the M88 and the latter one of the first "electronic-ified" M-cars. Apples to oranges.

If I had it, i'd pay 20k for a euro m5 in that condition. I see e39 m5's for 15k on CL all day long. Personally I would put all my eggs in a 1993 euro m5 basket any day over an e39 m5. Who knows whay they'll be worth in 20 years?!?

Every time I laugh at some rediculously overpriced car some putz steps up with his checkbook.
Not many buyers at that price and for SURE none here but who knows. If you don't ask you won't get and not even a moron will walk up and offer above asking price. Seller is obviously in no hurry, just fishing and hoping for a..............

Okay, my argument was stupid. But let's face the FACTS -- and this can be confirmed by my friend (who is a doctor, mind you) -- S38s require $15,000 rebuilds every 30k miles. That is not debatable. This car, nice as it may be, is simply too high milage. If you weren't aware, every part on this car has to be specially ordered from Europe at about a 5x markup.
But seriously -- it's too expensive mang.

Haha I was hoping someone with an M would chime in and field that one. I've heard of an s38 rebuilds costing between 8 and 10 thousand, but not $15k and especially NOT every 30,000 miles...:rolleyes

LOL :D
I have 193000 on the odometer and it hasn't been rebuilt yet. Jim Rowe at Metric Mechanic said he'll do it for 12000 and it would be 3.9 displacement + a new head, cranking 380 hp out, so there.....

Okay, I didn't want to have to bring this in to play, but my doctor friend who told me this is also a rocket scientist. If you want to dispute the claims of a rocket scientist you're a total goof.

Anyone notice the mileage is in KM? There is only 75k on that car. I would pay a pretty penny for a 75k mile E34 M5 Euro. Maybe even $22k.

There is no doubt this car is at the very least worth looking at. I still don't quite get why the e30m3 is more desirable when e34m5 were a much more limited production...

Fail. Facepalm. :nono. And so on and so forth.
You don't need to rebuild an s38 every 30k miles. Your doctor friend is being bent over by his mechanic, or he drives the crap out of the car without changing the oil, letting it warm up/cool down, etc. Does he take it out in the winter, turn it on and immediately bang it off the rev limiter?
Just because you're a rocket scientist doesn't mean you know squat about cars. I'm sure he knows a lot about rockets though. Like red rockets.

It may be a bit much if it was a 3.6
That thing is clean as hell and not exactly easy to get in North America. I'd pay full price if I could afford it.
