Picked up the 530/5 tonight. Clutch reservoir was empty as well as power steering. Put it into gear and started it up and drove it onto the trailer VERY carefully. Power steering pumps make funny noises with no fluid :shifty
Only pics from the night:

The car is a 6/95 530i 5 speed. Black on black. I think it has EWS, right? ALSO the key looks like my E39 spare key, the one labeled Master in this pic:

Is that normal?
To my surprise the car has Hella clear tails and side markers :buttrock
I'll update this thread as work commences :buttrock:redspot:alright

Labor rate? Engine cost? We found the '97 4.4 for ~$2k (no markup to customer)

I don't remember the book rates, something like 12hrs for R&R and I'd say 4hrs for conversion +/- 1hr for tuning. We don't charge book though, they're usually terrible guesstimates.
Motor is 70-80k mi maybe a little more.

I have similar plans for one of mine and I was under the impression that in terms of OBD I vs OBD II, (besides o2 sensor stuff) one could use the harness from a 530/5 and simply plug it all into the m62? Completely wrong?

Pretty sure that 6/95 means you'll have the early EWS-II. Blech, might be the most 'interesting' part of the swap. As long as you have another EWS-II DME from the donor car, you should be able to have a dealer 'marry' them for you. Otherwise, you might have to backdate some of the electronics (ignition switch ring, fuel pump wiring, etc) to match the non-EWS or EWS-I donor car.
I could be wrong, it's been a while, but EWS-II is the one thing that's caused me the most headaches whenever I've been up against it.

That is just stupid.
Good news though, got some power steering fluid and brake fluid today. Filled the PS reservoir and bled it. Nice and quiet.
Filled the clutch reservoir and pumped the pedal, filled it again and it built pressure so I took it for a ride :D While the B30 is nothing to rave about, it sure is rev happy!
Went through all 5 gears with no issues. Came back and checked the clutch reservoir, it was down almost 1/2inch so there is definitely a leak.
Total so far:

530i- 500$

Are you dense? Im not going to take the transmission out of my DD. If I really wanted a 6 speed I would just buy one. Im not goingto go through all that effort for one extra gear. When you do the swap you can do it your way.

I've a hunch that swapping in a DME box from a non-EWS car will remove that headache, and work just fine with the rest of the wiring.
Any M60 harness will run an M62, once the crank and cam sensor pickups are modified accordingly. I used a 530i/5 harness in order to have a cleaner install vs. cutting out the extra (transmission, mostly) wiring from my 530iT's. Of course, the splicing I did to delete ASC is far more than a few transmission wires, but whatever, it doesn't have to be logical ;), it just has to work.

So M60 valve covers will bolt to M62 heads as well as M60 ignition coils?
moroza
06-28-2010, 02:57 AM
Correct. M60 coils only bolt to M60 valvecovers (and same for M62). M62 coils work just fine with the M60 DME. Apart from coil mounting, the only difference between the two sets of valvecovers is on the port one - the M62 has the battery terminal on top (opposite the oil fill cap), and a tunnel to fit the cable for same.

the one next to it, valet, is the same as i had on my td, both cars appear to have hte same ring on the igniton etc for hte ews, i havent noticed any (physical) difference between both cars in regards to the ews. THe td definately had some sort of ews as my spare key i had cut couldnt start the car.

Yes! Thanks Geva, that's what I thought you had told me. Therefore, if a car has no ASC there will be no splicing/delete necessary?

Hey guys, I just bought an E30 and have an "extra" M60B40 in storage. In lieu of paying big bucks for a 6 speed, can I source a 5 speed from a 530 to back up the M60B40? If so, what 5 speed should I be looking for? Is it specific only to the 530 or was it available in any other chassis/configurations? My assumption is the B30 and B40 are essentially the same, excluding the obvious displacement differences... Thanks for the input...

As far as I know the trans in 530s is specific to M60/M62 and were not put in anything else that went to the states. It will bolt to a B40.

are you talking about a transmission for your 525? if so these trannies (5 speed and 6 speeds that originally came mated to the v8 e34's and e39 540/6) do not bolt right up to the 6 cylinder cars. Only the m60b30/b40 and m62's.

after 95 the 530's were 6 cylinders so those transmissions won't drop in with your v8. When you get into the e39's you'll need to look for the 6-speed out of an e39 540/6.

Like the philosophy. How'd you decide to put the m62 into the 530 if it is a rust bucket? Are you just going to run the engine and the whole chassis into the ground?

Yea pretty much. Until the chassis falls apart, then maybe it will go into an E30 or another E34. It's not so much rusted as just plain beat and tired. PO paid 2800$ to ahev the motor replaced with a junkyard engine. So hack. One bolt in each motor mount, ONE bolt in the starter (it fell out while we were taking the motor out) 4 of 8 bolts in bell housing etc. Broken wires EVERYWHERE. We'll see.

What kind of diff are you planning on running?
I am interested to see your experiences with RPMs at speeds over 60.
I might be doing this soon.

I have, somewhere, a 4.10 LSD. If I can find it, would you want it?

What would that come off?
I though that 3.15 were only available in the large case

3.15 medium open diff + 3.23 medium LSD = 3.15 medium LSD.
Ask me who has all these parts. Go on.

I'll just stick with my 3.23lsd, hwy gas mileage I still get over 22mpg which is enough for my heavy tank.

Not normal I got ONE key. You're lucky.

Through work, 123$ made by Victor Reinz. The OEM Counterpart is ~188 and on backorder from Germany.

What'd you pull a 3.23lsd out of?

I put the floor to the metal very often now after the swap because it now actually makes enough power to be fun to drive. Calculating gas mileage for the first few months is pointless because you'll be too busy enjoying all that hard work.
Freeway I get about 20mpg with all the bottom engine covers off and no alternator duct in place with cruise control at 70mph at 3k rpm.
City is probably like 12-14mpg.
