1. Where does the reverse switch go? Mine seems to be missing.

2. Theres a threaded hole on the drivers side bottom back half of my transmission with a normal grade 8 bolt threaded in. It leaks. Does the reverse switch go here? If not, what does?

Thanks

He'd make me drive up to his house and check myself lol. Are the e39 6 speeds the same as the e34 ones? I'd assume so but they've changed stupider things.

IIRC there's a difference between the two, but it has nothing to do with anything related to a swap so no headaches. iunno where the switch goes.

my car was on the lift the other day, should have asked sooner ;)

If the switch threads in then put it in and see if it engages the reverse lights.

Damn you

I dont want to pull the bolt out in case it's possibly holding something in place lol. And I don't have a reverse switch to try; I just noticed that it was missing when I put the transmission in.

I'll try to get a picture of the placement of the bolt when I go to the shop later. Kinda hard to explain where it is.

REalOEM is rather vague...

I was looking for that on realoem but I couldnt find it lol. I suck.

Thats not where this bolt is though, so I guess I'm missing two things. Forgot to take a pic directly of where the bolt is, but you can get a general idea from this pic.

I dont have any answers for you, but I am curious, did you put a m60b40 in a e30 or something? :O

why does it say auto transmission fluid if its a manual?

interesting custom transmission mount you got there...

Yeah it's all in my e30. Still an ongoing project though. I got the transmission shipped up to me from a junkyard in Florida, so I don't know what goes where or what they took off.

Some manuals take ATF, I guess this is one :shrug. Sticker looks factory.

My boss made me that transmission mount lol. I left to go get some parts and he had it made by the time I came back.

Some manual transmissions take ATF. Some take Engine oil. Depends on the manufacturer really.

Anyone know what goes where the bolt is?

Creaver
07-15-2010, 04:09 AM
reverse light switch.

Assuming that is taken from the LHS of the car?

E30SPDFRK
07-16-2010, 11:40 PM
Yes both are taken from the left side. So the switch goes where the bolt is? What goes in the hole in the second picture then?

Creaver

I don't see a bolt?

The switch goes in the hole where the edge of it has been broken off

The bolt is the 13mm cadmium one next to the atf only sticker. It doesn't look factory at all and it leaks. Thanks about the reverse switch though, I've got one coming in at the dealer Wednesday.

would a 5 speed m60 have a similar reverse switch compared to the 6 speed m60? I'll be hanging my exhaust up tomorrow and can take a pic if you like of whats down there.
PM me if you want me to take one.

E30SPDFRK

Thanks for the offer, but I'm pretty sure the 5 speed is a completely different gearbox.

Bump, getting close to being able to drive this thing and I want to have this all figured out by then.

No 540/6 owners want to hop under their car and look for me?

The reverse switch is mounted on the driver's side, towards the back, fairly high up (about as high as you can get while the side of the trans housing remains vertical).

Yeah I've got that- I want to know what goes where that bolt is.

Ok, I dug up some pics from my build. Your second picture in a previous post, asking where the reverse switch goes, is correct. As for that bolt... I have it too, but I have no idea what it does. It is not, as far as I can tell, a drain plug or access plug. My speculations are: that it is for in-depth maintenance or disassembly of the transmission; or for equipment not included on these cars (same transmission was in E46M3 and probably non-BMWs as well, with different bellhousings); and that regardless of its function, it probably has a copper or aluminium crush washer, whose failure causes leaking and which is readily replaced. I see a small chance that removing that bolt will releasee its attachment to something inside the transmission in a non-user-servicable way.

See attached, and also one of the pics in the opening post of my build thread (see sig).

Thank you very much. I guess I'll pull it out (with crossed fingers lol) and put a aluminum washer on it then.

That looks like the drain plug to me, just with the incorrect bolt in the hole.

I'm doing this same swap, but with a 5 speed from a 530I E34, but I do have an E34 540i/6, which I will run up on the lift tomorrow and get you a definitive answer. It is at the shop right now, but I'll be over there tomorrow and get you what you need...

The 530i's 5-speed is a completely different transmission. Not even made by the same company (ZF; the 6-speed is Getrag).

Patrick, that bolt is not the drain bolt; it's mounted at about 8 o'clock (looking at the trans from the back) in the rear housing section, while the drain bolt is at 6 in the middle housing.
