Yes, I know many people say not to buy a used car that has been modified but I have always wanted a S/Ced M3 and now that I am back in the market for a M3 why not take the opportunity while I can. My question is this. Given that the S/C has been installed correctly and not half-assed, has a good conservative tune, only a stage one kit running low boost (say 6-9psi) and the engine has no other major mods. Just how reliable are boosted S52's? How often do the S/C units themselves have to be built if properly maintained? Does a S/C really take away a large amount of reliability from the car? Sorry for all the noobness.

As long as it's not a powerdyne blower, they are very reliable. Seems rebuilds are usually not needed til 40k+ miles on vortech and rotrex units.

1 what supercharger has been fitted
2 charge cooled,intercooled or non
3 engine compression lowered or standard
4 that boost mentioned is it at the supercharger or at the balance tube

Well most that I have seen are on internally stock engines, as well as many running just stage one kits that are anywhere from 6-9PSI and I am not sure where that is measured from, never knew it mattered. As well as most stage one kits not being intercooled.

What about the HKS units that Active Autowerke uses?

Ok here's what you do:

Save up $21k

Spend $13k on supercharged M3. Drive it for 3 weeks, live, love, laugh.

Drive turbo M3. Be sad - hate life. Practice guitar and write a really emo song.

Sleep a lot. Eat a lot. Drink a lot.

Wake up - remove supercharger. Spend $7500 -$8000 on a really nice turbo setup. Sell supercharger, spend proceeds on water injection, clutch, maybe some upgrade.

Live once again and smile.

thats kinda what I did when shopping for my e36. I drove a local guys s/c e36 and knew I wouldnt be happy in the long run w that setup. Then I drove a TS....that I liked. Long run though, I knew turbo would make me happy.

dont regret it!

My s/c is still going strong at over 50K miles (no rebuilds...yet) though I don't beat the snot out of it...it's my dd & I take good care of it (~83K miles)...stock internals boosting 10-11psi...no problems so far (i.e hg blown, compression is 195 across, etc)...I'm not power hungry so I'm content at ~350rwhp...hope that helps

Question:

After purchasing the turbo set up,
does the songwriting style change?

To what? (answer correctly)

Extremely, if everything is done like you said.
