thats weird- i got trained that cmp is camshaft position sensor and ckp is crankshaft position sensor- even my snap on modis calls crankshaft position sensor ckp? somebody needs to set them straight.

You'll never see CPS on an ASE test. That's kinda what the auto field uses as a baseline.
CKP = crankshaft position sensor
CMP = camshaft position sensor
Nice try yourself though.
Anyhow, to answer the question:
Remove the vanity cover from the engine. Turn the key off. The connector for the CKP is the most-forward connector on the passenger's side wiring harness box-thingy. You push the clip on the box-side and the male side will come out with the sensor wiring. On the very front of the motor, you'll see the crank sensor, under the water pump and thermostat. You'll need a 5mm hex socket (ball socket works great) to remove the retaining bolt. The wiring is secured by a clip near the water pump, make sure you get the wiring back in that clip so it doesn't rub on the pulley somehow. Book time is half an hour to replace it, figure at least an hour since you've never done it before. It's not as easy as an exhaust cmp on an e46 (.2hrs), but it's not bad. You'll have a tough time without taking the fan out though.

I took ASEs in high school 6 years ago. Never saw it being called that but keep trying.Not sure about where you live, but around here the general consensus is the ASE is a worthless piece of paper. Just cause you can pass a test doesn't mean you can turn a wrench.

I knew you'd be the kind of person who can never admit when they're wrong and will keep digging themselves into a grave. You must have missed the days when they covered engine performance in high school, you must have also missed the A8 and L1 tests. You must have also missed the SAE acronyms list too (J1930).
Here, look at a list here on Bimmerfest:

YOU ARE WRONG. Not me, not AlmostStock. YOU are wrong, and you can't/won't admit it. That's fine, there are plenty of tools out there like you who pretend to know how to work on cars and can turn a wrench but can't tell the difference between a CMP and a CKP. As far as the ASEs, I guess you're right (at least in your case). You can pass the test and still not know entry level engine performance terms... Either that or you're bitter because you failed them.

:rofl someone is butthurt. Relax there brotato.
I was just saying I have never seen it on the ASE like that. I didn't fail them, I passed them but since I wasn't 18 I don't think they counted for anything so I didn't bother pursuing it because it's not what I wanted to do with my life. Please don't tell me you went to UTI as well.

butthurt? It's 7am on Friday and I have to go to work. Of course I am.
UTI / Wyotech? Hell no. Those guys are generally idiots. We get a lot of them who pass and don't know metric from english fasteners. It's overpriced and overrated.
You're good at damage control no doubt.
