After many many hours, I finally have DIS running on my laptop. I can read codes and it even read the model and year of my car automatically. However, I can not do any coding "can't read vin" and I can't erase codes, hourglass comes up and it just sits there. I have a chinese EDIABAS/OBD2 cable (it came with a disk but I did not use the disk for anything). Anyone know what's wrong here.

I suspect it's the wrong interface. In order to eliminate it as the culprit, can you point me to the correct cable? Also...anyone know what I was supposed to do with the disk that came with the cable? It never asked for any kind of driver disk or anything like that.

Should have mentioned that I was finally able to get everything working by using the instructions that I found on here. "read me first" helped get everything configured. The cable that I have does not even have the bottom row of pins connected to anything as far as I can tell.

Well....all appears to be working now so I guess it's OK for now.

Assuming you have correctly followed all instructions in the "READ THIS FIRST" file, most likely is that an antivirus or firewall program is running and needs to be switched off. Also make sure that you have started the IFHSrv32 Netserver before starting DIS.

for me, the problem was using the DIS v57 and the INPA5.0.2 install file which seems to include a more up to date ediabas. After i completely removed all the BMW Tools, I reinstalled with the Ediabas 6.4.3 and now the networking works fine and I am able to connect with DIS

DIS v57 works fine with INPA v5.02, (the version of EDIABAS used in this version is v6.4.7). Bear in mind though, that if v3.01 is not correctly upgraded to v5.02, there can be problems as valenti describes.
