View Full Version : Help me pick some wheels for my R8
Chifo Jr

While its been some time since I have had a BMW I still frequent the forum. I am looking to replace the factory wheels on my R8 V10. I posted some photos of it a few months back but the car is white with silver sideblades. It still has some black trim on the front and rear as well as the interior. I am thinking about either a three piece HRE with polished lip and silver powdercoat to match the sideblades or ADV monoblocks in brushed finish. What do you think? Here are a couple of photos of the wheels.

While they're kinda ugly on a lot of cars, I think the R8 would be perfect for the BBS CX-R's
http://bmw-e90.up.seesaa.net/image/081209-1.jpg
BBS CM would also look great
http://www.tom3d4.com/storage/Cm%20side.jpg
IMO the R8 needs a mesh/BBS-style wheel, but the wheel also needs to fit the high-tech/high-style/futuristic character of the R8. I think both of these BBS models do the trick.

The factory wheels I have now are titanium in color and that is why I am changing them. I really dont care for the look. With silver sideblades I think the centers powder coated to match might really set the car off. I swore I wouldnt mess with the car much but I am thinking wheels, carbon fiber front splitter and rear diffuser and a tubi exhaust with bypass valve.

I stand corrected on the CF40's but I am very sure these are 7.1's. They are a bit misleading in that they are 21" on the rear and 20" on the front and the car is slammed. I have no intention of lowering my car. It rides too nice to ruin.

Yeah, I think those match very well to the R8's bodystyle. The curves and bulges in the R8's body tend to mate well with wheels that are concave. Flatter face wheels work better with the Gallardo's more straight line/creased edge bodystyle.
Also, the tips of the spokes on the ADV10 come to a nice point, but aren't quite as sharp as the monoblock version, which would look out of place on the R8's muscular haunches. Check out how pointed the tips are on the monoblock. They look nice, but it's a little too much for the R8:
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4013/4296827456_1c843fb565_b.jpg
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2742/4295440233_db8505b27e_b.jpg
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1295/4692574430_dfbaefa1ac_b.jpg
I also like the rate of taper on the spokes of the ADV10, and how that complements the R8's body. Many wheels have spokes that lack very much taper at all, making them more fitting for sedan-type bodies.
In terms of the concave, I'd go for a medium amount. ADV.1 allows you to choose how much you want. I think it can be overdone for the R8. For instance, this would be a bit too much, IMHO:
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4002/4555641069_dbe7150d27_b.jpg
While it's difficult to get a nice balanced look front and rear, it may be doable. The front of this one is just a tad too flat, with respect to the rear:

OP, I remeber saying something about how not modding such a car would not last a couple months back. Good to see you're looking, but it really deserves a better quality wheel. Something forged and lightweight instead of boat anchors. The HRE monoblocks are a good start, but BBS LM-R or CH-R, VOLK G2, or NEEZ if they make wheels for the car would be better choices.

You guys arent making this any easier! I am kind of leaning towards the HRE 890R as I think having the centers coated to match the sideblades would look nice.
The Monoblocks look good but I am concerned on how they would look. I really like the way they look in black but I am not a fan of black wheels on white cars.
Hopefully another post of my car will help generate some ideas. BTW I cant seem to find an application for the R8 from BBS.

Well I just returned from HRE's facility. It is actually a pretty impressive operation, though much smaller than I had expected. I was given a tour by one of their sales people who spent the better part of an hour and a half with me. We took a number of different wheels and placed them up against the car and I have to say that the ones that stood out and complimented the car the best were the 890R's. I bought a set with brushed faces and chromed outer lips. Personal taste issue I guess but I am thrilled with how they look and cant wait to get them on. For those of you that are interested, HRE really makes a very high quality wheel, great quality control and their commitment to customer satisfaction is impressive. I will post up some photos within the next couple of weeks as they have agreed to build these on a rush basis.

I love your definition of not messing with a car. :stickoutt
Can't wait for the pic's.
