I was told this came out of an 86 e24. I assumed its a 260/6 because of the year and it has the fins but that middle section is throwing me off. Can someone ID it please?

Thanks,
Maury

Jeff,

Why the middle spacer? Do all the 260/6's have this? RealOEM and other images I've seen don't show the middle section except on the 280 from an M6.

That does not appear to be a 260/6. The 260/6 does not have the middle section like you are noting.

From the diagrams, it does look like a Getrag 280.

I'm thinking its a 280

worth some coin to the right person..

check with bentdsl he had posts around here somewhere on the differences.

granted.. it may have come out of an 86 e24.. an M6 that is...

take caution when matching a driveshaft to a 280

It's a 280. They are valuable, but not in unknown condition.

I have a 260/5 now with everything I need to do a swap in my 88'. Was looking for a 260/6 and came across this. I may just go with what I have and not mess with the 280. If the 260/5 ever gives out, I'll shop for a replacement at that time.

Thanks for everyone's feedback.

That is indeed a 280, you should buy it if you can get it for cheap. If you can test it to be in good running condition you could make some money on it. I would never install it in my own car though.

I would use it. But I would use any transmission that works. I don't have favoritism towards numbers or different design's of cases. If it work's good, that's all I am concerned about. What's that sticker on the right side? could be a rebuilt sticker, but I dunno. I've never seen any broken transmissions. I've been super hard on at least a couple, and never over worked them, have ripped up a clutch disk before though.

It just tells you what fluid to use.

Nah, you don't really have to worry about it failing, especially in a normal 'low torque' non M six. And If you got it at a good price why worry about it. But it's a close ratio gearbox. I would not want that in my car, the 5th gear is 1:1 so very high rpm/bad mpg/low top speed. These boxes where made to keep the M engines in their perfect powerband, with a matching final drive ratio. Imo you don't want it in a DD or cruiser for the weekends/vacation. It's quite cool though:D

So what is it worth is an unknown condition? States it had 128k on the car when pulled and shifted fine. That's low miles in my book.

I dont think anyone would give more than 500 for it, considering it's unknown condition
