Those can be a royal pain. I cheated and bought a short section of VW metal brake line. It's soft and bends easily by hand without kinking. I've done several this way. Bend the brake line into an "L" and feed the shorter end thru the firewall from underneath the car before installing the master. Tighten it all the way and then push the stub end of the master thru the firewall and mount it. Make the finish bends from underneath and connect it to the intermediate rubber line. Clutch action remains the same as with the stock line.

I installed the fluid feed line to the cylinder first, then snaked it into the firewall, then attached the cylinder to the pedals, and dealt with the other end of the feed line (to the reservoir) later.

Oops, my bad. Didn't read the OP closely enough. The plastic 45 degree elbow is barbed and will usually break if trying to pry it out of the old m/c. Did the new m/c come with a new rubber grommet. If pressing a new grommet into the m/c, do it separately first. Then wet the barbed elbow with brake fluid and work it in.
Like Moroza said, do it before mounting the m/c
