Well, I figure it's finally time to introduce myself. I'm Dominic49 and I'm a drifter. I've been around e30s for the past 4-5 years, I've gone through a bunch of setups from stock m20s to boost m20s to m62s and finally most recently an s50. I'm getting to a more competitive level of the sport and a 234whp e30 just isnt cutting it anymore, its time for power...

The base:
1989 325i 4 door.
cage
all bushings done
IE stage 3 springs and bilstein sports
factory "crash" camber plates
your run of the mill fully worked e30. ;)

So what do you have planned for it? Top mount with a T3?

Dominic49
06-15-2010, 08:05 PM
Well at the most recent event that I attended, Formula Drift Pro Am at Road Atlanta, I had some issue with clutch slipping so I figured it would be a good time to pull the motor and check things over.
http://ll.speedhunters.com/u/f/eagames/NFS/speedhunters.com/Images/Mike%20Garrett/01May/FD%20ATL/first18.jpg

out she came

http://lh5.ggpht.com/_FIpwuxIyty0/S6tfMqgjcQI/AAAAAAAAA8U/EKBvJcnTNUw/s640/SDC10629.JPG
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_FIpwuxIyty0/S6tfNSepbvI/AAAAAAAAA8Y/7pYy4z1LSgM/s640/SDC10630.JPG

while the motor was out I got some stupid idea from one of the local kids, some of you may know him as matt around these parts to throw some boost on the motor.

well as some of you might know matt is one of the masterminds up at TRM and they just so happen to know a thing or two about boosted bmws...

http://www.racersmarket.net/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&page=shop.browse&category_id=7&Itemid=93

so a couple of $$$$$$ later I got myself a turbo and manifold to mock up and figure out how to stuff into an e30 chassis.

http://lh3.ggpht.com/_FIpwuxIyty0/S-toH2E4LeI/AAAAAAAABRo/TfTYsH_kTAI/s640/SDC11069.JPG

the manifold fits fine but with the stage 2 compressor housing things were a little tight and it wouldn't fit quite right without a little bit of clearance on the subframe. so out the subframe came for some slight modifications.

http://lh4.ggpht.com/_FIpwuxIyty0/TAE6zbPR0cI/AAAAAAAABV8/clwGZUM8a1k/s640/SDC11103.JPG

http://lh3.ggpht.com/_FIpwuxIyty0/TA6wNfzfKiI/AAAAAAAABac/YcKMNdNcRXQ/s640/SDC11174.JPG

while the motor was out again I figured it was time to figure out the oil drain system. yes a gravity drain is possible for a street car but for an all out drift machine I wanted to be absolutely sure I was getting the best possible drainage I could. So a quick shopping trip over to ebay netted me an SCP NASCAR scavenge pump with v belt pulley.

now some of you may be wondering wtf where did you vbelt your crank pulley with, well the answer is simple, a stock m20b25 accessory pulley on the crank will bolt up to the m5x crank with some 5/8" spacers and some longer bolts.

setup will be turbo to drip tank drip tank -8an to pump in pump out to drain on drivers side of pan. -4an vent from drip tank to -4an fitting welded to the cam access bolts on the upper timing cover.

http://lh3.ggpht.com/_FIpwuxIyty0/TA6qd8xBc9I/AAAAAAAABaI/CL24m4vz-KI/s640/SDC11172.JPG
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_FIpwuxIyty0/TBgU6g4n0TI/AAAAAAAABdg/tjG48kbz06w/s640/IMAG0012.jpg

well the motor is back in and subframe has clearance with the compressor housing now but the compressor now rested lightly on the control arm balljoint. this was unacceptable and with a swift move of the angle grinder the balljoint was shortened.

http://lh4.ggpht.com/_FIpwuxIyty0/TBV-bVEBgMI/AAAAAAAABdU/9GHgFJXkjFA/s640/SDC11207.JPG

in order to give myself a little more peace of mind i drilled some new holes in the TRM motor mount arm and raised the engine 3/4" on the passenger side.

http://lh5.ggpht.com/_FIpwuxIyty0/TBV-b7fQV_I/AAAAAAAABdY/DTcRUonSa4o/s640/SDC11208.JPG

well that just about brings all of you up to speed on me and my projects. the car will be off to KGMade for some intercooler piping and exhaust plumbing. as always only the best will be used Tial BOV and Tial 38mm wastegate with .7bar spring and TRM blow through maf. the engine should be running within the next week or so time and money willing.

Gah, looking good but I was hoping the TRM bottom mount stuffs would fit easier in an E30.:( I'm having hella fun with my m30 turbo but lurking here makes me want to build a 24v e30 w/boost to see what all the fuss is about.:D

If you can outline what you did to get everything to fit in the end that would be
great!

brake lights have been working for some time now. the video from earlier was from the first drive :D

many videos and pictures to come

in short to get it to fit bottom mount

slight massaging of the subframe (cut along the corner and hammer in weld back together)

drill new holes in motor mount arm .75" higher to raise engine on passenger side

shorten ball joint on passenger side and use a 7mm short nut and some locktite.

finally gearing is to be determined it has a zf and 3.73 welded right now but I also have a 2.93 welded in the garage so i can get some longer gears.

r3vlimit will be set around 6750 since the car will se alot of it

should of got one of my top mounts to save you all the extra fab work.
You going draw or blow through on the tune?

Dominic49
06-16-2010, 01:33 PM
Fab work is a non issue. Thee benefits of bottom mount are worth the minute extra work too make it fit. Lower cg lower under hood temps etc.

As mentioned previous trm blow through will be used.

Nice work on the install. I've always wondered how well a SPA manifold fits an e30, and know I know. I'm surprised they set you up with a Tial BOV vs a Synapse. The Tial does sound sick tho. Why isn't trm doing your pipe work too?

I'm having my sponsor/close buddy off my do the piping as I have been deriving for him for years now, don't get me wrong trm can build some sexy pipes it just a personal thing more than anything else.the tial bov was also one of those personal preference things.

good news on the bottom mount, didnt think there was enough clearence in the E30. I may have missed it but what are your HP goals? My SC plans have fell through and I am contemplating starting a turbo S52 E30 build instead. So many good used parts always for sale and the power options are great. Do you have any fear of weakening your subframe as it is not anymore triagulated all the way anymore?

i have no goals, what ever it makes it makes. i'll leave the magic in the hands of mike and matt. truthfully if i had just moved the brake booster over .75" or so i could of raised the motor up enough that all the subframe would of needed was a couple of choice hits with a a BFH hell most of my notching was done blind anyways and could be alot more localized now that i know exactly where to cut. i dont see the subframe being any weaker now but who knows i'll go smash some curbs with my peerless skidplate and let you know how it holds up. :D

So you're going to pump the oil up with a mechanical pump? Idunno man - this is risky. That drip can thinghas to fill up fully, higher than the top for the pump to get oil. If the pump runs dry....

Dominic49
07-18-2010, 07:52 PM
the drip can has a pickup tube going to the bottom and after testing it has no problems priming itself and keeping the tank dry.

we shall see how it ends up in the real world but all indications are that it will be fine, although I might have to move up to a bigger pulley and slow it down. right now it is right around 5/8 crank speed.

Jon, you may not recall, but my m10 has the same thing. Thats where he got the idea. Also every turbo porsche uses the same concept. Its a scavenge pump, it can suck an air/oil mixture no problem.

He has a tube that looks like this in his drip can.

Just seems like it'd be a better idea to keep the pick-up wet, unless it dips into the tank.

Oops - missed it, then yeah, that'll do. Didn't see the extension/fitting.

(His is going to be spinning a lot faster with the pulley sizes he's got going I think)

Deags, I'm not really over thinking the RPM of it all - very different pulley sizes. You have a very small pulley driving a large pulley. He has a large pulley driving a large pulley. Might be close to engine RPM if not higher. Make sure it's rated for that!

for what its worth in the nascar application they run a 6.25 pump gear and a 4.5 inch gear on the yolk of the driveshaft. if your up for doing the maths nascar is restricted to a 9500rpm rev limit. tire circumference is 87.3 inches on the drivers rear and they are running around 180-190mph around 9000rpm

Mr Deagle
07-18-2010, 08:44 PM
1:1 4th gear is all you really need to know.

About 6500rpm pump speed?

5mall5nail5
07-18-2010, 08:45 PM
So long as its rated for it. Gear doesn't matter if they're running it off the driveshaft.

Fwiw a 4.5" drive pulley with a 5" driven pulley = 90% drive speed. So at 7000 RPM you're turning 6300 RPM.

Mr Deagle
07-18-2010, 08:54 PM
Well, the engine eventually turns the driveshaft, 1:1 4th makes for engine rpm at driveshaft, 4.5" pulley to 6.25 pulley makes for 72% reduction so at 7k its at 5k.

Right, but then there's 5th gear ;) And idling, lol.

What is the pump rated for?

Mr Deagle
07-18-2010, 09:00 PM
Well nascar only gets 4 cogs.

crank pulley is 3.375 iirc unless i measured it all wrong rofl then i could be wasting some HP by turning the pump faster than needed rofl

Mr Deagle
07-18-2010, 09:10 PM
Thats only 3700rpm at 7000 engine, well below what nascar runs it at. Shit is fine.

we shall see. need to attach gauge to drip tank and see if i'm pulling vacuum. still working on getting a smaller pulley for the drive worked out regardless no need to waste power overdriving the pump.

there is a subframe in the way having the hose go down then up over the subframe then back down would not work so well especially in a high g sideways situation.

probably next time I'll run an e36 rear sump pan and relocate the swaybar to infront if the subframe. smack the firewall a little budda bing budda bang

the dyno afr was reading .5-.6 or so points lean due to the face that we had to crimp off the exhaust crank case vent port with some vice grips since the 3rd 02 sensor port was behind it. tune is trm blowthru.

Your new horsepower and torque curves. They are higher across the rpm band than the s50 N/A lines. All that extra area underneath the turbo horsepower and torque lines in between them and the s50 N/A lines. That my friend is area under the curve. It's mostly talked about before 4000 rpm in the low end.

Is it possible that the wiggly lines on the dyno can be caused by something else? Slight slippage or just the dyno itself being a little spastic... I mean you gotta leave room for the dyno to be erroneous maybe... Or is the power delivery really that Rambunctious???

Its interesting how some graphs are silky smooth while others are freaking jumpy!

e39 + e34 + tree = just enough to keep an e30 in check

day 2 of work, kyle at www.kgmade.com started working with the short strand fiberglass to do some of the finishing work. the body line stil needs to be molded straight but it sure is looking a hell of alot better. tommorow we will finish getting the tail light situated and work on getting the rusty bumper bolts out so i can fit for the replacement. Then primer and possibly paint if there is still light left.
