NO!

And VW doesn't just own Audi... pretty much the same company, and for the most part always were. Porsche, Audi and VW have always been under similiar if not the same management. I mean, Ferdinand Porsche "designed" the VW bug AND the 356 Porsche.

Righto, like my above post says, Land Rover is owned by Ford.

BMW gave Land Rover a bunch of their 4.4l V8's for the new Range Rover, but I think that deal is going to end... Ford is taking a bath because that engine is so darn expensive.

I saw a documentary on this, how rolls royce was up for sale. I cant remember the details, but I remember rolls royce favoring BMW to be the new owner because BMW has been making their engines for a while now (since they are no longer hand made), and then VW came out and placed a bid that BMW couldn't/didn't want to match. BMW threatend that they would no longer make the engines if rolls royce was sold to VW. VW and Rolls Royce didn't want that to happen so they had an agreement with BMW saying that VW will own Rolls Royce for a few years then BMW will get it if BMW would still make their engines. I think it was something like that. Its been a while since I saw that documentary.

The Quandt family owns/controls BMW. The Porsche family owns Porsche, though Ferndinand Piech, once head of VW and Audi, is part of that family. VW owns neither BMW nor Porsche.

Vickers used to own R-R/Bentley cars.

The company was sold to VW, but the real R-R, which is partnered with BMW making aircraft engines, decided that they didn't want VW making R-R cars, so they yanked the rights and sold them to BMW.

VW was ambushed, but they seem to be content carrying on with only Bentley.

Porsche is one of the smallest independantly owned car companies in the world. But they do have good relations with VW.

lincoln and mercury are owned by Ford too. We're still missing some, I'll make sure to remember them as I drive by the Ford Motor Company's buildings today on my way to work. And who owns Range Rover now? The Ford building is still sporting their sign.

Out of all the car company conglomerates, I think that the VW circle is the best and most prestigious, even though VW is a part of it. When the first pictures of the new Bentley coupe were printed in C&D, my dad came to me and said, “Do you want to see a really nice VW?”

D'oh! Thanks Lauren. Can't believe I forgot Lincoln and Mercury.

Range Rover is just a model in Land Rovers line up, I thought?

you're right steven, I put Range Rover by accident. The sign says Land Rover. I have a bad habit of mixing that up. I forgot to take a look at the signs today. After 2 days of not driving my car, I was having too much fun comming off the onramp and merging, and checking out some RSX with FI next to me on the freeway. My bad, I'll try to remember to look on my way home.

Ford is not the largest shareholder of BMW. Ford derives no revenue from BMW unless through some investment in some subsidiary. Porsche is seperate from BMW, which is seperate from VW, which is seperate from Daimlerchrysler. What may be the cause for confusion is that most European companies have cross holdings in other like companies, for example Renault (if one can call them a car company) holds 30% of Nissan. So maybe there was some reference to a crossholding.

Porsche is separate from the VW group, and as a side note Porsche is currently the most profitable automaker in the world. They do have a very close relationship, audi builds the tiptronics for boxsters and regular 911s. They also codeveloped the Cayenne/toureg, but they are built at separate plants. Porsche and VW also codeveloped the 914s of the early 70's and in europe they were even badged as VW-Porsches. Also Audi built the 924s for porsche, so they have a very good relationship, but they are still separate. And VW wishes it could own BMW.
