New to BMW. I'm as green as green gets. I'm not by any stretch of imagination what anyone might call a mechanic. I'm motivated to do as much with my 540i as I can. I bought a 94 for $2000. It has 160K miles on it and the previous owner apparently took good care of it.

Its issues are with the interior. Right now, The concentration is divided between two things: window tinting and the sound system.

Tinting, I'm going to have done professionally.

The sound system seems doable, at least where diagnosing the problem is concerned. I'm sure someone here will recognize what I'm talking about. The radio head turns on, all the do-dads on it seem to work, but there is no sound except occasionally some static. There is a cd changer in the trunk and I have to wonder if that has something to do with the problem. How can I check to see if both the amp and the cd changer are grounded properly? I figured I'd start out simple.

Can't really help with your stereo issues, but wanted to give a free local bump. I'm in Collierville. You need to try to make it out to one of our CCA events soon! I do have an OEM head unit you can try if you wish.

For your radio, I'd start with Bentley manual (if you don't have one, it is highly recommended). The radio wiring diagrams are in there. You can also download the ETM (Electrical Troubleshooting Manual) from here:
