I was just wondering what kind of fuel economy a bmw 525 535i gets. i have a 540i right now and its quite expensive cause its a v8. so if someone could tell me that would be great thanks.

I'd switch the M20 in front of the M50. Best MPG car I've had.

you've never had an M50 I take it?; even the EPA rates the M50 at 1-4 mpg better than the M20......and it makes more power.

Never owned an M50 eh?
My 1992 M50 525i:
19-23mpg around town if I RAPE my car.
21-25mpg around town driving nice
30mpg+ on the freeway.
My M20 cars never got close to that.

I don't know how you guys got 30+ mpg on the M50 525i unless you were doing it in a manual, because both our auto M50s were getting 25-28mpg on the freeway AT MOST running completely stock. City mileage seems to vary from 17-22 depending on what 'city' is to you (hills, lots of stop go vs long stretched 'city' roads).
As for my 535i/5, if I baby it on the freeway I will get ~21mpg, while city is 15-17mpg.
My '89 535i with Auto gets 14-15 city and 24-26 highway.

not stock but is manual
bosch design 3s, fan delete, 195 tyres at high pressure and a slightly shorter diff makes me account to my good economy (not motorway cruising)
effectively i can shift to 5th at 30 or below, i cant remember how low and car still pulls cleanly, all be it slowly at low throttle
i suspect my motorway cruising is slightly penalised due to the diff but i get the feeling it compensates for high gears and low speed. OBC reads an average speed of 24 lol... i rarely get to sit at speed on motorways for more than 5 minutes on my daily commute.

My 535i/5 gets about 20-21 in mixed driving. On my drive to Houston from Denver I was averaging about 25-26. I'd bet it'd do about 18 in straight up city driving.

My computer says I average 22 with almost all city driving. Highway I can sustain 38

OBC sez ~24 mpg overall. Reset it on the highway and it stays around 28-29 mpg. 205/65-15s, bone stock.

I'll just put it out there that I hate all of you. I average about 16 mpg for a tank. I drive mostly in town.

as an m30 owner who drives the crap out of his vehicle, if you're getting less than 16mpg city its time for a tuneup. i never drive in 4th. rarely shift before 3500rpm and my gas pedal might as well be an on/.5/off switch. because those are the only three positions that exist. and i still manage to get 16 out of it until i got the MAF kit. now 17mpg.
it'll be interesting to see if i can maintain that when i get my turbo installed :laugh

I was getting 14 or 15mpg in the M50NV auto, but after SeaFoaming this past week it shot up to 17+mpg....this is all city btw.
I drive to school and home which is about 20 miles in city total, then to work which is about 2 miles to and from. So I usually drive 24 miles in a day. I'd say 17 isn't too bad since I only get to open it up to 55mph for about 6 of the 24 miles on my commute.
I am going to take a small trip tomorrow and will reset to see what I average on the interstate. I will try to keep it around 75mph and see what happens.

I think my issue stems from 90% of my drives are to work, which is 2 miles away. By the time the car gets to its warmed up temperature I'm shutting it off. It is never running efficiently.
And besides that, whenever it's warmed up I can't help but put my foot to the floor. I also have a 3.15LSD so that is probably mucking up the OBC calculations a bit.
Lots of variables are adding up to shitty mileage. The OBC says I get about 21-22 on highway or about 25 on the instant mpg gauge while cruising.

I hear that.
My last road trip netted 22 MPG (162 miles) with about 90% highway at about 75 to 80 MPH.

makes no odds, milage is calcualted by injector pulses and road speed sensor, fitted to the diff. Tyre sizes and different injector sizes can throw it off
KyleCleveland

Where is the road speed sensor located? Isn't it on the input side of the differential?
uk525td
06-13-2010, 04:49 AM
i assume its on the output, at least thats my understanding.
i guess if it were on the input they would have saved some cabling and put it on the gbox output ?

looks like its on the output in the diagram

Non-vanos 5 speed with a chip...if I lock the cruise on 70-80 and just roll, it will pull anywhere from 30-36mpg. If I really watch the eco gauge, I can get over 25 around town, but that really takes some effort. (these are all math at the pump figures FYI...not OBC readings.)

Driving styles, gas, location (hills or not), mechanical condition of car, mods, wheel sizes, weight (such as speaker boxes, people), etc. will give all of you the varying results/numbers you see.

From home to school upstate is like 240-250 miles and if i fill up at home, it only uses half tank.

An M50 525i getting 25mpg's is pretty standard. My car has 265541.76KM's on it, and it gets more than 25 if you watch it.

Sometimes i would like to have an m50 just for the sake of better fuel economy. The m30 loves to down the fuel.
