These systems are approx 30 years old and most have not been well maintained. The whole system should be pulled and cleaned from the condenser to the evaporator, including new lines, a new receiver dryer, and at least flushing the expansion valve. A new rotary compressor, either Sanden or Seltec may also be in order. Kbert, a well informed contributor on this board, has his car below 60 at the vents and he lives in Las Vegas. I am sure there are alternatives on the market, I even heard of an a/c specialist in Texas who uses GM evaporators, but before going through an engineering nightmare, why not work with what you have. I even went so far on mine as to put new rubber seals on the air vent flaps.

I just recharged my R-134a retrofitted AC and I'm seeing vent temps of about 40 in the rear console and 48 in the front vents. but its only been about 90 today, so I haven't really been able to "test" the system yet.
