I already put this in the electronic specific thread but I'm throwing it in here also.
1999 323i convertible
the center console digital display comes on sometimes for a while and it works fine, but when I shut the car off and turn it back on, sometimes the display doesn't work and neither does the hear and air. The stereo was doing the same thing, but now it does not work at all. fuses are fine, tried swapping another working stereo from another bimmer into it but it would not turn on either.
thanks

I wonder if they share a ground.

They are two separate problems.
The stereo head unit goes bad, with the lights dimming, the volume control knob gets funky, the FM signal gets weak, etc. You can get your stereo head unit rebuilt for about $120 and it'll be as good as new. Do a search on ebay. I found an electronics company in Long Beach, CA who does the rebuilds, outright or exchanged.
The climate control is also a removable "head unit" that also has a dimming problem with the display, and as it gets worse, it will have a mind of its own, working when it wants to, etc. There is a DIY to fix this, where guys say that you just have to replace a resister or something. I read the DIY after I went to the stealer and bought a new $500 climate control unit. Do a search on the DIY. It's worth a try. Good luck!
