Can somebody please give me some info on these M62 engines with VANOS.

I have a 2005 Range Rover that uses the BMW M62 VANOS engine. I am a LONG time BMW fan so I love that the 03-05 Range Rover was built by BMW and uses almost all BMW parts.

The part that is driving me nuts is the VANOS rattle at idle that sound like a diesel. Who has changed the VANOS units? How involved was it and how expensive? Is there some internal part that is failing on the M62 engine similar to the M50 motors/ inline 6

Also, whats the deal with the valve clatter on start up? Is there a check valve that is not closing and allowing the hydraulic valve to drain? It takes only 2-5 seconds for the hydraulic valves to pressure up but its damn annoying.

Other than that, the engine runs AWSOME, I love it. I just dont understand why the nicer the car I buy, the more expensive the noises I come across.

I would really like to fix the hydraulic valve clatter on start up, I know its normal for them to do it in the morning after sitting all night, but the fact that mine does it on warm engine that has been sitting for 10-15 min is NOT normal.

Any help very much appreciated :)

It is very very rare for the entire VANOS to fail. Dr. Vanos makes a good kit that will quiet your VANOS. http://www.drvanos.com/ A little rattle on cold start-up at idle is no big deal.

Are you sure the rattle isn't your timing chain and guides (you may need a new tensioner)? Also, the lifter ticking (if that is what you are referring to) at start up can sometimes be remedied by using a different weight oil. I had it on my pre-vanos 540 and running a heavier oil has eliminated the ticking. I also had a constant ticking that turned out to be a loose spark plug.

Good luck.
