yeah photobucket is pretty terrible what with them hosting over 1600 of my images you see throughout the forum in a neat and easy to navigate online album- for free.
imageshack pics load slowly when there are several in one thread. that is the definition of suck to me.

Well, I use Photoshop to make em smaller sometimes or you can use "paint" program comes with the Operating System; Vista or Windows 7 (I think that Paint in XP has some limitations thou)
....or better yet ...use freeware tool online, nice and simple :) http://www.picresize.com/ (http://www.picresize.com/)
Cheers

Turn the image size DOWN on your camera. Unless you are taking pics that you're gonna turn into photographs later...or pics that will need to be blown up for detail etc...all you need for posting images on the internet are 600 x 800.
Or like others already stated...use an image application and look for the way (directions) on how to decrease an image's size.

Photobucket has all sorts of photo editing tools. You can reduce the size of or crop your image amongst other things. And all for free as Mark points out.
I edited my signature using their tools and added the text as well.

OP,
IrfanView - Official Homepage - one of the most popular viewers ... (http://www.irfanview.com/) is also a free and very easy application to use in resizing pics.

I have used irfanview for a long time, it's such a small application (four hundred kilobytes) and it's great for cropping, resizing and basic editing. Another good pic tool that is free.

Interesting forum discussion here on the subject of who's best between Photobucket and Imageshack. Like any image hosting service their are good and bad for both. Looks like an even split to me.

Although I've used Photobucket for a few years now and am fairly happy with it, I'm going to give Imageshack a crack.

You can upload any size and they'll automatically rescale for you to pick.

Firefox
1. Right click on the image
2. Go to "Copy Image Location"
3. Go to forum, type [ img ] then press paste then type [ /img ] (no spaces)
Short Cut:
On Step 3...instead of typing [ img ] & [ /img ] around your pic's URL address...just click the little yellow icon above the message box (it looks like a stamped post card w/pic of a mountain peek on it)...then paste the link you just copied into the dialog box ( [Ctrl+V] if you want to use a keyboard short cut for even quicker paste). :D

I believe this steals bandwidth from the host site and is frowned upon. As long as the site approves of this, it's probably okay, but generally it's not good practice.
