I've changed replaced the instrument cluster of my e46, now I've got the the tamper dot. After searching on the forum here I've read that the vin number should be matched with your old cluster, so I bought a bmw scanner 1.3.6 cable, which I use through a com port. When I want to change my vin, it tells me to restore to factory defaults first, but when I do that I get error (E=2). So can someone help me with this problem, I've found a similar problem in another post and here is the link.

It worked to change the VIN. But now I've understood that you need to code the cluster. How can I do that, I've already tried with progman, program gives to options 1-code cluster, 2-replace cluster. When I do code cluster it says coding failed because CKM settings couldn't be saved. Does someone know how to code a cluster.

The clusters have builtin protections to prevent the EEPROM from being flashed after the initial coding... you have to get it off of the cluster, read/program the eeprom using a chip programmer, and then reattach it to the cluster. No way around this afaik.

I don't think I could post links, because most of the boards where I found the info deal with actually changing the mileage of their own cars and getting rid of the tamper dot... same methods should apply for legal purposes though.

You cant. You need 15 posts and 10 days membership (Which you have).

You both only have 4 posts...

Once you have coded the last 7 of the VIN to the cluster, you need to code the ZCS/FA for your car to the replacement cluster. It is stored in 2 modules in the E46, depending 0n when your car was made, See post 32 here by terraPhantm for a discription of which modules hold the code (http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1469193&page=2).

Im bmw scanner, scan for units then aces the other module that holds the code, you should have the option to copy it to the replacement cluster.

You can also do it with NCS expert if you have access to it.

As for milage correction, you're on your own!

I heard older clusters can be adjusted with pa-soft 1.3.6 aka 1.36. I know it worked for 97 and 98 e38 clusters, but didn't work for 01 e38 cluster replaced new in 03. not sure of the break. maybe 01 or 00.

Yesterday morning, suddenly the instrument cluster stopped working. None of the dials moved and no lights.

I have checked the fuses, disconnected the battery to try a reset. None worked.

Took it to a good shop and they have diagnosed saying its the instrument cluster which needs to be replaced and they can't (only dealership can).

I can get a used cluster online, but how to I reprogram it to show the correct milage etc.

car: BMW 325i, 2003.

Thanks a lot for the suggestions/comments

If you are in Europe try these
http://www.clusterrepairsuk.co.uk/

You can install a used one, but it will need to be factory default coded, mileage adjusted (Only with an EEPROM programmer, not BMW tools) and coded after fitting to match your car options, especially around DSC. Unless it is coded with your VIN before you fit it.

What worked to change the VIN?
I've been looking for steps on how to do this for way too long. so frustrating as nobody seems to know how to do this.

Can someone create the steps needed to do this in a simple way?

hi all for changing cluster i think its 2 way
1, scan old one and write it with new one by scanner ,
2. ncs, and coding and programing your car all with ista p
when you going with ista/p , first tell we have changed control unit , and it check it auto , and you can complete coding your car, to make all module matching with each other

I heard from my repair shop you have to update all systems when changing only one - so this is not true then? (didn't believe it though)

Hi everyone,

My cluster died and I bought a used cluster and while waiting for the cable and software, I decided to change out the eeprom. When I put the cluster back in the car, I got the word "code" on the display where the mileage should be and nothing worked. It beeped constantly, the low fuel light was on and the temp needle was in the red. I hadn't put the cluster back together yet so I took it back inside and replaced the eeprom with the original and it was back to normal tamper dot and no DSC. Will the code message allow me to program the 35080?

Thanks in advance

Hi there

I ran into the same exact problem when i edited the eeprom from a 2002 E46 325ci Cluster i purchased to replacement the factory unit On my 2000 E46 328ci. We tried just about everything an si would get the "code" on the Cluster

I got fed up and purchased the same exact Cluster ( same year And Part number) And i corrected the VIN And mileage with BMW Scanner.

My experience with the M35080 was a pain in the butt. My vehicles factory Cluster came with the 93c66 chip if i memory is precise And BMW Scanner made the job a simple task.
