Anyone have one (2000) and up? Im considering replacing my mustang with a 2000 and up 540is six speed. Their prices are 20 grand less than the same m5's, and Ive heard good things about superchargers on them? anyone know of/have one, who would care to share?

Thanks:wave:

just a fyi, a 00 and a 01 and up has some differences...mostly cosmetic.

S/C would be kinada pricey....I would seriously consider a M5 if u have S/C in mind.

Pricey as in 5 grand, or 10 grand, I found some m5's for around 52...I was thinking 35 for the 540, and then mayybe 5 for the supercharger? A roots would be nice and out of the way, but I think they are probably centrifugal. Im looking for something that would keep up with, or no, keep up with a stock AMG E55. So Im thinkning 400 whp, or abpout a 100 hp increase am I looking at?

there are some nice M5s for sale in the $40k-50k range! They seem to depreciate drastically after new.

also, don't forget, to insure a M5 would be much higher in my research experience.

I just want the shortest route to a nice, 4 door, bmw with 400rwhp, and some reliability..insurance is a consideration

Check out Dinan. I personally don't like them, they are pricey.

An M5 will need quite a few mods to get 400 ponies TO the wheels.

Thats why I was thinking the 260 RWHP 540 IS. Its only 140 horses from the goal...actually, even a hundred horsepwower would be great, arent they a lot lighter (400lbs) than the 4250lb AMG?

ESS S/C run around $6-7K plus install and some extras. Dinan is around $12K for the S/C plus install, then they tell you that you need their stage V software, but that only comes with the CAI, throttle body, and the intake manifold, so by the time you are done w/ Dinan you are $20K in the hole...

Dinan does have absurd prices. Never heard of ESS..link?

Hell Yes!

7500 for 404 Horsepower..I presume they mean crank!

How about that intercooled european kit for 12500 with the new bumper and everything? And thats on only 8 psi or 9 psi:buttrock

I see a 540is 6speed in the near future.

0 to 60:4.4 -4.7:buttrock

its not really hard to lotsa mod to beat a M5... it comes back to time & money... sad thing is that unless u take it to the track...there isn't much oppotunity to see what it can do in high speeds which is where it really shines...

check that out........he's dropped alot of money into his 540i...All DINAN. He's got a bunch of comparisons (vs. E55, M5, C32, 996 TT, etc)

How 'bout that fuel mileage? (9.8)

Id settle for thirteens and get 20. Maybe he only has idle and WOT

He's an automatic. With the 6 spd fuel mileage will be better. Also his comparisons are bogus. All those have been done with slicks, including all his 12 second runs. On street tires he runs low 13's consistently.

He's dropped so much more into that car than I intend to. Ive always loved the e39 series, but preferred my v8 2doors. Now that the throid (and last) is on the way, I figure the little stang will be rediculous, becuase I already have a couple of race/show/project cars. (the Euro 323, Turbo TA, etc) I just want a four door that wont embarrass me on the highway, and is fast enough to be really fun.

What does he have, 30Grand in that

v8 2drs? perhaps u r better wait for a brand new 6 series :)

after spending all that money on mods and the car... gas mileage would be last on most people minds....BMW has terrible gas mileage compared to its japanese competitors... which is shown my the gas guzzler tax when I purchased it new.

junkie... look at strapping an AA S/C to an E36 M3/4... OR, the M52B28 in my wife's touring would LOOOOOVE a turbo... :D:D:D

I do like the e36 four doors, and HP would like to do a turbo kit on one..I coudl get a smokin deal..

unfortunatley, I am 6'4" and need the rear ac/longer/wider cab space of a 5 series.

And yes, the 6 series is awesome..but it comes back to that 4 door option...ever strap a kid into a seat in the back of a 2 door?

I am 6'6" and dont have a problem with my M3 sedan. I dont think you gain that much rear seat room with the E39. You are gonna have the seat all the way back anyway so the rear behind you will be perfect for a baby seat. You should go find one at a dealer and test it out. Slap one of the new twin screw superchargers on it and you have M5 power in a 500 lb lighter car.
Should be a kick in the pants.. I might have to sell one of my kidneys for that setup when it comes out...

you make a valid point...and the auto would make the commute home easier. The ironic thing is, babyseats are bigger than kids! My 5 year old needs half the room of the 16 month old! The newborn will be like carrying a laundry basket.:biglaughb

The whole setup would be 20G's less, and the twin screw super would take it easy on the engine life and underhood componnets. Turbos are so darn hot!

There is somene here in town with a e39 540i with the ESS S/C kit, and I think it has been good to him. He is on the boards sometimes, maybe he will put in some info. The car sounds pretty mean!
An e36, even a door, is pretty cramped compared to any fiver, even an e34 like mine. I really wanted the M3 for all the performance it offered (lighter, better handling, rack and pinion steering, etc) but it was too tight for me so I went E34.
I have a 3 year old also, and know that it's not only the kid, it's all the assorted baggage (back packs, diapers, strollers, teddy bears, extra clothes, etc etc). You'll be crying if you short change yourself on space.
If you can handle gas mileage no better than the teens, Id go for the 540i.

:D

:biglaughb..

How 'bout those "puke containment kits" you have to carry?....:az:

Gas mileage is irrelevant, as long as its over 15, IM good. May be getting a suburban too, So my wife can keep her e46 AWD...She loves that car more than life itself.

Hopefully, the ESS owner will respond
