Lets make this snappy and to the point. This morning get in the car. It starts up fine then about a mile into my commute the check engine light comes on and it starts to smell like a smoke bomb went off. No smoke but it has that distinct smell. Besides the smoke, its acceleration is rough and far from smooth like yesterday. It seems to shift fine, just whenever i turn on the ac it smells and even without the ac on it accelerates roughly. Is it the 02 sensors? Also the engine seems to knock at all times.

If your engine is knocking i would NOT run it at all. The damage you are doing will kill the engine real fast. Also i would clean the MAF and or get the codes pulled to see what the problem is. Unplug the MAF and then start the engine see how it runs without the maf if it is smooth try cleaning the MAF with maf cleaner and see if that works.

Sounds like someone filled your car with diesel while you slept.

maybe your knock sensors are defective.

Sounds like
Vac Leak
02
Cat.

In order of what I'd consider to be common. But seems odd that one of those would come up so suddenly. Almost like the computer went into a limp mode it started running like that. Big temp change, any moisture?

Thick white smoke occasionaly when it starts up but that happened before it started to pretend like it was diesel.

You could always trigger the fuel pump to run with a fuel line disconnected and flowing into a glass jar. Get a pint or two, see if you've got water in your fuel. Thick white smoke is pretty common in the winter, but it's not winter now, you shouldn't be seeing much of that at all. It may very well be head gasket season.

why? what happened?

Great question... I have no idea. I've only had the car for about two months. And actually its not overly expensive. Its what i expected.
