Lots of way to upgrade. Just look at what others have done over the years and decide on your path. As XTREMETUNING mentioned, I do not use any back fill. Only the subwoofer (http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1446581#) coming through the ski opening. Using an 8" JL. Fine for the music I listen to, very tight. Presently changing things after a few years. This is what I have right now.

Used existing holes in panel to mount sub woofer enclosure, no drilling.
