Im making a new post cause 92 pages is a lot to look through. I have been accepted to step. i get my associates in auto this may then start step in June in wood cliff nj. My concern is what i should know before i get to step. I have not gotten an orientation packet or anything just what i downloaded off step site which does not seem complete and doesn't have the current generation bmws on it. I figure i need to no the engines and trannys but how extensively do i need to memorize there specs. Iv been trying to memorize group numbers and just learn the technology's in the cars. The E designations and now F how far in the past do i need to know these.. back to the 80;s? as well as the badge numbers and the years different models were introduced within a specific e designation?? it would seem like a huge task to remember every little detail before i even get to step. Seems unclear what i should focus my time studying :mad:mad:mad:mad

congrats on getting in, my advice is to know the e designations to e39 and what engine goes in what and know as many acronyms as you can, no matter what you do you wont be prepared enough. Congrats again that is an awesome accomplishment and good luck. im currently in step in nj so ill probably c u there

Fast track with the jokesss!
Congrats on getting in Mike. The best way to prepare yourself is pretty simple. Know E designations from the E39 to present, like Gil said. Make note cards and memorize the group numbers and acronyms provided. And understand how to read the engine codes, transmission codes and VIN. Knowing which engine is in each model is essential, but I've found that it's very easy to pick up once you are at the program. There are people who have been poorly prepared as well as completely prepared, and both are still in the program. It's all about your desire for progression and passion. I'll probably see you when you start, if i'm still there.

I know the FAQ is a little old, but it should answer any questions you may have about what it takes to get into STEP. If after reading through the first few pages, you still have questions, feel free to start a new thread.

They don't expect you to now all that stuff when you start. Show up on time every day be clean cut and you'll do just fine . You'll get the designations down quickly as it will be your life from now on.

I have to agree with Hype36e30m3. I tried to understand some of the designations before I started in my program, and I couldn't get it. When I started, I found out that nobody else had a clue either. Just show up, give it your best, and you will do fine. It will be scary for a month or two, but you will eventually understand it.
