Hey guys,

Just wanted to hear people's feedback about what possibly occurred to my 18" RFT Potenzas (equipped on sports package) on my 335i coupe the other night.

I noticed weeks ago that there was a good sized bulge on the sidewall and was told not to worry because they are RFTs by a fairly reputable tire center. The other night I couldn't swerve to hit a medium sized branch/log and the sensors on the dash lit up that the tire pressure is low in the right front tire and I looked to see that the sidewall has a rip on it. Was this primarily because of the previous bulge or is this just because I hit the log? Either way, I'm probably going to go the route of paying $310 for a replacement at my BMW dealer for what was either a stupid mistake or some kind of issue with a bulge or perhaps both!

Also, I've heard that some of the Potenzas have had recall/ warranty issues?

Thanks for your help.

The tires haven't had any recalls or warranty issues.

THe bulge was most likely due to a broken belt which was possibly caused by a pothole or other road obstruction.

You should purchase a new tire.

Very very bad advice, change tire shops immediately. The bubble means the sidewall has been compromised and is not safe to drive and can burst at any time. The tire shop's advice compromised your safety and your investment (car).
You must have hit something hard without realizing it. A normal tire would have blown out on the spot. The Runflat gave you some protection. Replace it ASAP or be prepared for this possibly:

EDIT: Just read the rest of the post. I guess you were luckier than the person above. Count this as having an angel over your shoulder and learn from the experience. As soon as you see a bulge, replace the tire.

Good luck.

Thanks Matt for the sage advice. I do feel fortunate now that I was driving a long time after I saw the bulge. With the tear in the sidewall, should I just get my dealer to pick up the car?

I would call BMW Roadside assistance and get it towed. Unless the dealer is a mile or less away, I would not risk it. Even though driving at a slow speed for a short distance may not pose a risk to you, but there is a possibility or damaging the rim or the fenders should the tire fail completely and shred.
Call ahead though and make sure they have the tire in stock.
