i had an idea to take my waterlogged dme, a silver label ews II and desolder the chip
swap the chip to another silver label dme ews II and avoid the dealer realignment
from wht i've read about the ews system, the codes are kept on the keys and in the ews unit as well as on the chip
im crossing my fingers, or i'm going to have to eat $100...

For $100 bucks, its really cheaper for you to risk one waterlogged EWS and one fucntioning EWS ?...

You would also need the ews unit and keys from the other car. If your going through all that just switch the dme as well and not even mess with the soldering.

I think you may have misunderstood him, if he's swapping his old EWS chip into the new computer, it would still work with his current EWS components, at least in theory. From what I've read on these kinds of swaps, they can be hit and miss.
FWIW, you don't need to take it to a dealer do have it aligned if you can find a shop with the right computer and software. I had my new DME aligned by a local shop for $20. It only takes them about 15 minutes if they know what they're doing. BMW is gonna charge you an hour of labor regardless of if it takes them 15 minutes or the full hour.

yes this is what im doing
much better than a $125 tow to the dealership to give them more of my hard earned money.
i'm not asking you all weather it's a good idea or not, i always seem to get a flamer response around here. i am going to do it, i just want to know if anyone with any knowledge and less flaming might know beforehand if it would work...
thanks, rskeys

Get carsoft 6.5 and you can align your ews.
