I have 2000 528ia .My dealer says the vanos needs to be replaced. Thats the reason why the car stalls when warming up in the winter. Does anyone have any experience with this. Is there any after market solutions. Car is out of warranty. Does anybody know of any good mechanics in the northern jersey area. Thanks.

i just had the same thing happen to my 2000 528it. although it seems to run fine, the check engine light recently came on and the dealer said it was the Vanos thing. they quoted $1200 to replace it.

another service shop quoted $850 and they come highly recommended on this site. but they're in MN. anyway, if the car hasn't had oild changes every 3-5000 miles, the dirty oil can clog small passages and screws up the timing. at least that's how i understood them. they suggested running sea foam thru it and changing the oil and seeing what happens. i didn't sense a great deal of urgency. they also have another 2000 528 coming in this week to do the same repair.
