my nav unit has packed up on itself and i need to replace it. i have the Mk3 in my car at the moment but was thinking i might just upgrade to the DVD Mk4 straight away. is it simply a matter of buying a new Mk4 unit and swapping it out for the old Mk3 unit?

Yes it is. It should take less than 5 min, as its a wire for wire swap. You will need the DVD map disk, but I think the MK IV will still read the old CDs.
Disconnect the battery during the process.

Note: the special tool made from wire shown in the above link is nice but not required. You can just push the clips in with your fingers from the side of the unit.
Also, that link shows a swap with a MK II. That is much more involved. A MK III for a MK IV is a simple slide out, disconnect/reconnect wires, slide in.

I thought there was a software swap/upgrade, also.

You get upgrades with a Mk IV, and I dont know why you wouldnt upgrade to the latest software, but you dont have to. Last software update for the Mk IV was 4 1/00.

the new unit should be coded to work correctly with your car. you can have the dealer do it or google navcoder.
