I am finishing up replacing the head gasket on my M52tu but I want to be sure I am setting up the gears properly on the camshafts before I install the VANOS.

Does anyone know of a good writeup for the cam installation or cam gear timing setup for the M52tu or M54?

I have the cam locking tool and the TDC locking pin.

I have a TIS not bentley, is there any way to set the timing without the tool 11 6 150? The big flat aluminum part that mounts where the VANOS would usually go?

Thanks!

So you don't have the jig for the secondary timing chain either? Both those tools usually come as a set.

in/lb torque wrench?

I do have that. I have been an E36 guy for years, just never needed the plate on the front.

yeah the front plate really lets you test the cam timing. If you did everything else perfect, you wouldn't need it. Without it there is no way the double check the timing.

To me the big thing is, if you followed the directions to the tee you could be very close. The real big potential to screw it up, is not setting the the tensioning tool to 6 in-lbs. Above or below will cause the timing to vary.

Okay, thanks for your help!

I got it all back together and all is running smooth and perfectly.

I didnt have the plate but I turned the motor over several times and checked the timing again and it was in check. I did this 2 more times with the vanos hooked up to the oil pressure line and it was still good.

There is no CEl and the car runs better than before.

Glad to hear it! I do have the tools in case you, or anyone else, needs them. Generally I rent the set out, with the cam locking tool for $50+shipping.

I'm ready to install the camshafts on my 2001 530i. I installed timeserts and installed the head. I also have the Bentley manual.

I need is the VANOS special tools and the jig to install the camshafts.

I can be reached at 719-271-8819 or tonyseran@yahoo.com

They are out on rental right now, and reserved for a local BMWCCA guy in mid-December. You're welcome to rent them after that.

Do the tools you have include the jig to install the camshafts? Is the jig an absolute requirement to install the camshafts? Thanks.

Check the DIY section for a removal procedure, and do the reverse.
