Hey guys my 01 525i sometimes doesn't crank, it's a manual and sometimes when I try to start it, it acts as if I'm not holding the clutch while starting, nothing will happen, no clicks or anything, everything power works fine...does anyone have any ideas of what it could be?

Probably the clutch safety switch. If it goes bad, it will act as if you haven't pressed the clutch all the way.

Ok an update, sometimes if I hold the key in the start position for like 5 sec it will start cranking...could it be my ignition switch? Do you have a part number for the clutch saftey switch?

Ya I can't seem to locate the part itself on real oem. Any help?

Dude:

I made some assumptions about your car on realoem, this is what I came up with: 61318381612. I can't figure out how to post the picture here, but if you go to realoem and search for that part, it should get you started.

How to copy diagrams from Realoem or BMWfans.info: move cursor over diagram, then RIGHT click...you should see a prompt to COPY IMAGE LOCATION...do that them come back to the message box and click on the YELLOW icon above the message box (it looks like a stamped post card with a pic of a mountain peek on it)...this opens a message box where you can now PASTE the link you copied.

#9 is the clutch safety switch: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=DT33&mospid=47584&btnr=35_0248&hg=35&fg=05&hl=165

How do you access that part? Looks like maybe pull the lower dash?

Anyone bypass this switch altogether?

That works in firefox but there is no such option in any version of Microsoft Internet Explorer. In that case right click on the image and select properties. The URL is displayed. Copy and paste it.

No insight on how this was solved? The more information you leave here the better.

The car has a theft prevention system called EWSII, the key sends a signal to the EWS computer to unlock the starter. Sometimes the keys stop sending the signal, sometimes the EWS does not see it. Luckily your other key solved the problem and it did not require a new EWS module, would probably be a good idea to go ahead and order a replacement key.

update:

the symptoms that were happening before are happening now on my new key. do these keys normally go bad? could it be my ews unit going out? Should I order a new key and try that?

Does NOT hurt to own an extra key!

well, i dont think its the clutch switch because this was happening with my first key and I switched to my other key and the problem went away for a little over a year, and now the second key is having the same symptoms as the first key, is the ews eating my keys up? how much does an ews swap cost?

took it to a mechanic, i think he said it was throwing code 80 on the ews...what does this mean? Is the ews something i can change myself or does it have to be programmed

were are the codes?

nop, new EWS (you need to buy only a new one uncoded) cost around $100.00 + installation.... but you can do it with INPA/EDIABAS or SSS Progman

see ya...
