First of all what do you mean by kickdown? If you are referring to what I think you are its for neither, its for rolling acceleration. Personally I hate the d@$# thing.

im referring to the "button" after you push the pedal all the way

Accelerating is what i meant by top speed

If the trans doesn't downshift when you want it to while in D mode press the kickdown switch to drop a gear or two (when applicable) for maximum acceleration.

I believe doing so puts the adaptive trans software into "sport mode" until you resume to normal driving behavior.

The kickdown is for the jump to hyperspace (at least in the 540:devillook).

Not sure how you "argue" about something like this...but if you two found away...so be it. :confused

But back to the question of when to use it? The answer would be...when you need it. Much like asking/arguing about...when do you turn the lights on...or when do you wear a suit...or when do you use a fork.... :dunno: ....the answer is always going to be something like...when you need it, when it's required, when it's useful, or when it's prudent. :stickoutt

FYI: Extreme sport mode is when you manually select S4 or S3 (depending on if you have a 5 or 4 spd auto tranny)...which has a more aggressive shift program versus the "adaptive sport mode" selected by ATC (adaptive transmission control).

you could use it for taking off or accelerating from a constant speed. Top speed doesnt seem to be the right wording

whenever you want to push your car to the max whether it be passing 525i's or getting out of the way of a wandering shopping cart, kickdown.
