View Full Version : Keep the PTG spoiler or go new school?
Don Nguyen

As much as I am about performance, I am still down with doing it in/with style.
Keep the PTG wing on the car as, and keep the whole kit "original" as a homage to the original PTG car:

Or
Go new school and go big, with a straight element wing (less drag, more downforce as well actually):
Not exact spoiler, but same style/idea.

I dunno, tough choice, i have a feeling that the newer spoiler would look out of place on the car...maybe not, but it definatly would be interesting to see either way car looks sick Don :D

More awesome pictures for no other reason than them being awesome, and that I found/saw while searching for pictures of the spoiler:

You don't get an opinion until I see your PTG kit installed on your car. Better not be making any new threads behind my back either :P

PTG all the way, no comparison in my opinion. It gives the car a distinct look.

PTG. It looks proper on the car. The other wing may be more performance minded, but it would look kinda ricey.

I forgot Alex has a similar wing on his car, with the same kit as mine:

Worse comes to worse is I'll just keep/have both spoilers.
I want something bigger. I also wouldn't mind freeing up some drag that the PTG spoiler causes.

So you ask for an opinion, say people don't get one and then proceed to just reject everyone...ok. Why bother making the thread?

my vote is stop worrying about silly bmw's and post more pics of your 964 :shifty
in all seriousness, unless you really need more downforce I'd keep it OG

#2. It allows the spoiler lines to 'melt' more into the body lines. I am NOT an artist but one lived with me for three years and she showed me how lines 'blend' 'melt' or 'work against' each other.

the ptg is styling, but i would definitely go for the other because performance is key on the track..

I'd go for a new wing. I just think they look so badass, and I always feel sad when I go to track days and look at all the race cars with big wings :( Makes me wish I had one.

1992 964 C4, 125k, coilovers, wheels, sound system, etc/misc. Simple as that.
Once it's officially up for sale, then I'll make a thread for it. Although most on here are probably not prepared to spend ~$20k on a car that's almost 2 decades old.

If you're racing competitively, do what gives you the best performance. Although, after seeing this picture ^ I'd personally stick with the PTG wing.

PTG all the way... unless you need the downforce then switch it up. Either way, looks sick.
Don Nguyen

I do not compete competitively. Too much work. I just go out there, have fun, and then drive home.
I think the spoiler on his car may only look weird, because of the way the mounts look. Dare I even say, it's almost too big?

Spastic - I've seen that car before. That DBM car is a King among peasants. I want his front lip (same bumper as mine, flossman), rear canards, and spoiler. Yes please. However, considering it is one huge piece with the trunk, I can only imagine the shipping costs of that thing.
Naknak - I've seen you thread, so I know where you stand ;) That spoiler is one of the possibilities. However, it's on the small side. Since I don't compete in any sort of class, I am not restricted to sizes that most of those spoilers are built to/for.

Seeing as how it seems to be a common trend for items to be mistreated during shipping these days, as well as shipping from the Netherlands, I wouldn't want to ship it either. Pretty gnarly setup though.
And for what its worth, I think I'd like to see a "new school" spoiler on your car. It sounds as though you have no qualms buying one and keeping both spoilers... Sounds like a win/win to me. Money doesn't grow on trees though.

It's not a cheap hobby/direction I have gone with my car, and I've accepted it. However, as long as I am still having fun, it's worth it to me.
I think enough people have convinced me that the old wing does complete the car. However, I've also kinda decided myself that the car can/will potentially look good and perform better with a new wing. Now to just find the right one.
BTW, I liked the warplane shark design you did on your car, from a picture I saw somewhere. I wanted to do something like that to my car/helmet, but I just couldn't get it to flow with the rest of the car correctly.
I like that kind of stuff. Only thing I was able to do for my car, with the nose art type art/theme was this on my rear spoiler upright.

PTG all the way Don. It flows with the kit's...E36's are all about angles.
Go to the Saturday ALMS race at the LBGP and see all those cars in your pics...

A larger wing will only help with downforce/performance at certain speeds. I doubt you will actually get to use the full potential of a huge wing most of the time unless you're pushing it on the straight.
I know you're new motor can definitely benefit from it, but for looks I'd still stick with the ptg as its not as 'crazy' as the bigger wing and will still be pretty optimal.
Don Nguyen
03-18-2010, 12:48 PM
It'll actually help at all speeds. However, it'll be more obvious at higher speeds.
Taken from a discussion about wings in the track forum section right now:
