There is an ad for an '85 928s that will NOT go away. Says "mechanically perfect, interior needs work".

Someone help me (I need a "sponsor" for old german sports coupes addiction).

Go on and buy it, what's the worst that could happen?

I am a huge sucker for 928s too... If you are mechanically inclined and not too intimidated by electrical annoyances I'd say go for it. Parts can be expensive if you buy new, but there are groups out there like us that can be a huge help with things like that, and there's always ebay if that fails.

I have found that there is a reason an add continues to pop up. There is usually something wrong with the car. In this economy though there are a lot of exceptions. As the market gets flooded with excessive toys there are a lot of nice examples that don't get picked up. I watched a really nice 79' 633, over the preiod of 1 year, drop it's price every few months until it finally sold to someone on this forum. It appeared to be a really clean, low mileage car and I have noticed quite a few 928's in the same condition as well. If I sell the M6 it may well be replaced by a 928 S4 or GT. If you have the cash then go for it.

Regards,

Dwight

Exactly, but I'm tempted to just go see why

Ha! Have you looked at my central locking saga?

My middle name should have been "Murphy"...

I had planned to buy a 928 instead of another e24. I did a lot of research, even joined a Porsche forum. Except for the timing belt, they seem to be great cars. It's also a design that never looks old and like the e24 it had along production life. A real supercar of it's time that can be had for 5- 8000 for a decent one.

This is the last place you come to cure acquisition syndromes.

If you need something to put you over the top check out the wheeler dealer episode for the 928 (should be on you tube). Not my fav color but they did a pretty nice job I thought.
There are two folks at work that have 928s. I really like them too. They seem pricey for parts and for a daily driver I think the 6er would be better choice.

You people are not helping....

It is dark blue. I have had more than enough work getting the paint on my black 6er back in shape, but it sure looks good for the 5 minutes it is clean.

I don't know if this will help you at all, but the last couple of times I came extremely close to buying a 928, I cured myself by looking at parts prices. $1100 radiators, $300+ water pumps, $90+ ball joints... After considering that sort of stuff I came to the realization that a turbocharged 6 series would end up being quicker and probably cheaper (and possibly more reliable) in the long run... and look about as good, just in a totally different way.

Ahh, the voice of logic. Nothing to kill a car buzz like big numbers.

I still might go look at it. What can one look hurt?

The 928 has been on my list (as has the e24) for a long time.

Said EXACTLY those words to my wife when I showed her the ad for my 6er.

Is it local? If so and you'd like some company / a second pair of eyes, I could tag along. Let me know.

Whoa, check this one out:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1993-Porsche-928-GTS-Polar-Silver-Metallic_W0QQitemZ190380393979QQcmdZViewItemQQptZU S_Cars_Trucks?hash=item2c538e45fb

I think I would require it to be in that condition to seriously consider it. Obviously, that is not going to happen (price, that is).

While looking at this month's Sports Car Market, in the auction results section they list the outcome of a 1986 928S, dark blue, with ratty interior which sold for $8k.

In the comments they wrote: "When German luxury coupes (not just Porsches) start to unwind, it is best to keep your wallet in your pocket and walk away. ..you are looking at a future money pit."

Wow, that hits a little too close to home, eh?

Oh, I'm not giving up. I never give up.

Now there's and ad for a 91 300CE (another one on my list).

I think I may pop by and look at both today, since it's in the 70's and my 6er is all shined up.
