Just installed it today. Install time is quoted at 30 minutes, took me about 2 hours. If I were to do it again tomorrow it would probably take 40 minutes or less. The directions are pretty straight forward, but some parts are a PITA such as removing the cup the shifter sits in, there's a special tool to remove it OR you can use two screw drivers- you put them in the slits of the cup on opposite sides, cross them to make a x then rotate and push it out. This part took me like 30 minutes, but if I were to do it again it'd take no longer than 30 seconds. It's kind of like riding a bike once you've got it down you're good you just have to be patient!

Directions I used: http://bmwtips.com/tipsntricks/tips_pages/uuc_short_shifter_install.htm

Impressions: the throw is definitely shorter and it was definitely the missing link between the CDV delete and ZHP knob, only took it for a 2 minute drive to test it out but it felt good. As with any ssk the throw is reduced and the shifting is a little bit more notchy and takes a little more effort. I won't lie I miss the nice mushy stock shifter feel a little bit, but I think I'll warm up to it once I drive it a little more.

what's the difference in geometries between the E36 setup and the E60 545i setup?

Not really sure, I've had this shifter sitting around before the 545 shifter mod was even heard of, so I didn't do any comparisons. I did notice the ball on the stock shifter was plastic, and the ball on the m3 shifter is metal, I'd assume the 545 shifter is basically the same as the m3 shifter, but with a plastic ball for a more luxury feel.

Here are a few dimensions of other shifters:

Changed my mind, this shifter is badass, went for a long spirited drive today it's unbelievable how much it has changed the car. One spin around the block wasn't enough to give a real review! Part of the reason the shifting was so notchy is the lubricant didn't spread all over the ball. Should of done this a year and a half ago!
