i have a 1992 535i totally stock i want to put a msd ignition in, i was wondering if anyone has any tips on what to get and have you had any problems and did you notice any gains in performance or gas mileage

Its a pretty straight forward install. I did on my turbo car (same M30b35) The unit is water proof so you can mount it just about anywhere.
Edit: There won't be any gains on a stock motor. I did it because of spark blow out issues under lots of boost.

only advantage you may gain is if you use a 6aL box with 2step rev control for launching/no lift shifting. other than that you won't see any advantage/performance/mpg gain on a stock/semi stock application.
i also had the same issue with boost (on a mazda though) and used an msd to provide more spark and it worked great

i was also wondering if headers would bring any gains to the car?

quality long tubes are good for a few hp. not much bang for the buck at all there.

Ireland engineering has a good set of headers for less than $500.
