Okay, I've been interested in getting a GT1 or OPS off ebay since my GF bought an E46. There are clearly lots of posts/threads about purchasing and installing the software.
here is what I want to know- people seem to prefer the v44 and prior for "programming ability" what exactly are we talking about here? Are these things that SSS cannot program in later versions?
-dazed and confused:confused

V44 was the last version of DIS/GT1 that had the ability to perform coding and programming functions. Later versions maintained diagnostic ability but coding and programming required use of supplementary programs such as SSS. Coding is the ability to change optional functions, such as automatic door locking at a pre-set speed, whereas programming is exactly what it says.

So getting a higher version of DIS doesn't matter if somebody were to get a version of SSS with it?
Note: All I personally want is the ability to activate items I install like a factory alarm or Nav system. I assume GT1/OPS is overkill for that but I would like some clarification that I think is missing from the rest of these posts.

Would you care to elaborate? (If I ever buy a GT1 system I will try, but some insight would be nice)
Can these systems change the engine programing? (ala chip)

You may as well set up a program that will do programming and diagnostics that is easy to use and has maximum functionality.

a program that will do programming and diagnostics
such as?:confused
What you are saying is that these DKs on ebay are just a waste of effort, that the DIS software plus a $30 cable will do the same thing?

Pretty sure I have read through that entire thread(and most, if not all, of the other stickys/parked) and I do not see any answers to my question. I'll read thorugh them all again I guess.

The software DIS and Progman (SSS) is intended to be used by BMW service technicians, so you should have been able to answer one your own questions; Do you think BMW would provide software that allows the ECU to be reprogrammed with new fuel maps, remove rev limiters, make timing adjustments, and otherwise undo any of the engine and fuel managemnt programming that they spend millions to develop, by any first-year service tech with access to the OBD port? If you are still unclear, the answer is No.
But it will let you code modules to your car, like adding a nav unit or alarm, and code them, and save yourself a trip to the dealer, because this is the exact same software they are going to use to do it.
You can program key and car settings with DIS (v.44 or below) or SSS as well - my thread on SSS demonstrates this.
