While I'm not new to Bimmerforums I am the relatively new owner of an E34 Touring w/S50 swap. With my 95 M3, I did wheels, bolt ons, custom interior, sound system, and stereo. It was a show and go daily driver (took 2nd place at the NOPI Nationals in 02) and I loved it.
Now here's my dilema. I don't know what direction to go with my touring. From what I've seen from the owners of the tourings on here, they're all very clean and understated while the other E34 owners are a mix of racers and well, non racers, (not to offend anyone but I think you know what I mean.) So here's my question. Has anyone tried to make a truly "high performance" E34 Touring? With the S50 basically stock with only a Conforti chip, ECIS intake, headers, Magnaflow exhaust, UUC Short shift kit, and Hartge suspension, should I leave the engine alone and just finish the body, or really try to boost the hp numbers with a turbo or SC kit and truly have a sleeper?

Sorry for the long post, just bored and the touring just seems to have unlimited possibilities.

Most of the guys with modified tourings keep quiet and out of this section. There are two turbocharged tourings that I know of and a 3rd in the making if I recall correctly.

The way I see it is that you'll be spending the money in a heavy chassis, and that money could go so much further into something smaller and more agile. If you want to break the mould there will be a price to pay but in reality if you're looking for something that will win, I think the money could be better spent elsewhere.

Yes, there are plenty true high performance tourings. There are M5Ts, also a member has a s52 swapped w/supercharger (is he still on here, havnt seen him post in a looong time)

The problem with s/c the engine is the engine bay in the e34. None of the kits will bolt up directly. They will bolt up to the engine, but the engine bay is set up differently then an e36. You can do simple bolts ons like I did (I did everything shy of cams) and be around 250hp (Im optimistic, I havnt dynoed yet). Otherwise you can do s/c, but there is some custom piping involved in getting it to fit. Then there is also a turbo as well.
