I think I need a new water pump so I called a few shops and got prices of 700-900 dollars for install. I saw one posted on ebay for 80 bucks. I might try to do this myself. Does anyone have a Diy with photos! I have a 1994 530i . Help me please.

Total DIY project. First tool you need is a Bentley manual and 2nd a 32mm fan clutch wrench ( less than $30 off EBay) the rest is not a big deal. You will quickly learn that you either get smart and start doing a lot of stuff yourself, or pay to play. I'm sure a search either here on the forums or on the net will yield you a DIY on WP replacement for your car. I can't provide you detailed instructions on the V8 WP replacement because I've not done one, but I've done several on the I6 motors and they are rather simple. Also make sure to use quality parts. There are several sponsoring vendors here on the forums that will provide quality stuff. My favorite is RMEuropean.com and use realoem.com for part numbers and picture references.
Welcome to the forums and good luck.

did this to my car about a month ago. was the first "major" DIY i have really ever done, and it wasn't so bad... actually kinda easy.

my biggest problem was the fan clutch. i highly recommend you buy the special tool or make one. others here seem to not need it, but it was a royal PIA for me without it.

here is the DIY thread from the DIY section:

and here is my thread detailing my trials and tribulations. a lot of good info in there from others trying to help:

good luck and godspeed.

the m60 waterpump is not easy, esp. doing it for the first time. Find a a local forum member to help, or take it to a shop. My first time doing it I broke a bolt in the timing cover and had huge problems until I discovered helicoils. Also, have spare water pump gaskets around because they can be ripped easily.

dont get a no name waterpump off ebay. Get a graf waterpump and make sure it has a metal impeller. the job is not that bad but when i did it, i redid the intake gaskets and such which make it a lot more easy. you would have to get the fan clutch off with the tool, remove the main serpentine belt. Remove the harmonic balancer because it blocks a few waterpump bolts. Waterpump pully off, then take out the waterpump. The waterpump has 2 cooling pipes that enter it from the other side so if your not taking the intake out you will have to be very careful taking the waterpump out. Try not to remove the pipes with the waterpump.

Felt the need to bump this old thread because this job is such a PAIN IN THE ASS.

Not terribly hard, but SUCH A STUPID DESIGN.

Back to work now...

Really stupid design is hiding the pump behind the cam belt. And then mounting the engine transverse so you cant even see the cam belt cover bolts, let alone get at them

Its not that hard, I didn't have much problems. Theres one bolt on the bottom thats a bish to get to and to can only turn it a tiny amount at a time with a standard open end, one of those ratcheting wrenches would have been a godsend. For the fan clutch I just wedge a big screw driver across the bolts and against the bottom pully and have gotten it off just fine many times. Of course I dont have a fan clutch anymore ^_^

And yes I have seen MUCH MUCH MUCH worse designs to where you pretty much have to take the engine out to change the damn water pump, now thats stupid.
