Hi, my name is Steve and i have have a problem. I have had an automatic for almost three years now. I know, I know, its a problem that needs fixing.

So for step one i have this:

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d118/StevethePirate33/P1000415.jpg
http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d118/StevethePirate33/P1000413.jpg

e36 (GASP) m3 tranny with about 100k. 75$

I also have the pedal assembly, shift surround, knob, and boot. Not a lot but its a huge start. I have Sam's huge list of needed parts (THANKS SAM). I am supposed to pick up the driveshaft today with the diff but the kid who is pulling it is charging me nothing for it so its at his convenience. On the list of not ordinary parts to swap are a "F1 RACING PROLITE FLYWHEEL" on ebay for 245$ and a 545i SSK and proper bushings.
Thats all for now! Stay Tuned!

Nice Steve! Excited to see your swap complete. Keep up the good work. That is one hell of a deal for the 5-speed!

If i do this job in my driveway then ill do that. I have the option to use a professional shop with everything i could ever need if i give the guy a bit of money, im still waiting to hear back from Bloodhound50 about that

:D Just kidding bro!

Steve, great job on getting things cheap. I would definitely recommend paying the extra $$$ to do the swap in a professional garage. You'll end up buying tools and spending a little extra time if you did it in the driveway.

A buddy of mine named Buddy is doing one of two things. he is either loosing his license for speeding and lending me his mustang to drive during the swap, or he is gonna lend me if when he goes away for about a week. 84 gt 5 speed.

Use some very fine grit sand paper to get the surface rust off of the input shaft on the trans. If you don't, you will have a tough time sliding the trans on as the rust will catch on the pilot bearing.

its always worth it to have the tools though, if you need em at one point chances are you'll need em again. ;)

Good lord its been a while.
I have thus far:
13lb LTWFW
trans bracket
clutch fork
zf320
3.23 diff
m5shifft surround
shift boot
knob
525i linkage
pedals
master cylinder

Im just about done searching for used parts. I just need the wiring loom for the crusie and reverse lights and driveshaft and i think the rest of the parts are going to be new. Im pretty sure the diff is open, but even so its only temporary until i can find an lsd.

Looks like you got all the main parts. Before I forget, make sure you get the proper connector on the shifter selector rod that is on the trans. The one you have on yours is an E36 one, the E34 one is longer so the shifter doesn't hit the consol. I ran into this problem after the swap and had to replace it with everything installed on the car.

As for the wiring, not sure why you're going above and beyond. Just grab the reverse switch wiring, and then mate it to the x511 plus on the auto shifter. Very simple and easy job, the cruise control is even easier. Don't mess with anything on the x511 plug other than the trans error message (and reverse wiring obviously), otherwise the CCM will think you're in park (to start the car) and not activate cruise control. All you need to do is pull the starter relay and jump the terminals, or get a manual starter relay that does it for you.

Cars with immobilizer relays have the relay located in the drivers kick panel, vs yours should be in the fuse box under the hood.

Nice! Keep going! Where'd you find that diff, bottom of a lake? Man I appreciate not being in the rust belt anymore.

Mine looked almost like that, didn't both painting it or anything. Unless you got an LSD, don't bother cleaning it up.

Im going above and beyond because i want to do it all right the first time so if i run into a problem, it will be easier to diagnose. i will be getting a manual starter relay sunday. ill grab that rod when i go pull a drive shaft. theres no rush on this swap.

Ha no. one of the guys on here (mdv) was parting out a 525/5 localish to me. I sent him a pm and he cut me a stellar deal. I shot up there today and got the stuff. the diff will be cleaned up painted. I need to find a local sandblasting place.

Well I don't see what you're trying to do with the cruise control. Once you pop that manual starter relay in, the cruise control will work. Just make sure you plug in the connector for the pedal switch.

Im not doing anything now lol. i had no idea how it worked because i havent looked into it. but now i know, and knowing is half the battle. thanks sam.

Steve, did you get the clutch in? WHich clutch do you need to use with that flywheel, and can you confirm the brand?

I already bought an M50 clutch kit, and I'd like to avoid sending it back or selling for a loss, but I also don't want to do this twice.

Thanks!
Ian

I read that its specially made to work with stock clutches on the site. It's specifically an e36 328 wheel.

russiankid
10-01-2010, 09:14 AM
^^^ True, because the 328's and M3's used a bigger clutch. I believe they had a 240mm clutch.
