The steering box on my '90 535 is going south and I would like to know the pros and cons of putting on a servtronic box vs. putting a regular box back on. I remember someone talking about putting on a servtronic box and not hooking up anything, basically running a manual steering box. Is that a possible worthy application or not? All comments and ideas appreciated.

If you can get one, then definitely put servotronic. If your car doesn’t have wiring, it’s not a problem. All you need is speed signal and of course + and -. And yes, without connecting, servotronic acts harder than regular steering box but when you wire it up, you can turn jour wheels with two fingers. I have driven one E34 that had this and the steering feelt much lighter when parking or going on slow speeds and harder on highways.

be aware of the cost either way, steering boxes are not a cheap item.

You'd have a hard time trading an entire E34 for a new one.
FWIW they seldom fail so there is little demand for them new or used. It took me a very long time to sell the used one I had on offer and it didn't sell for much. I think I ended up with $50 or so after shipping and the robbers at paypal.
Good used of either variety is the OP's best option.
