A few of us in this thread have. The automatic vehicle identification will not work without the mod for the ignition detection. http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=803202

Be prepared to spend hours trying to get it to work!

I have a genuine VAG-COM cable. I touched together 3 pins on the *CHIP* inside the cable and INPA sees ignition and battery on. Then you solder OBD pin 7 + 8 and that should be it. Problem is I broke the USB solder on the PCB and I need a small tip for the soldering iron to fix that.

I have a working vm/GT1 setup using a cheap ebay vagcom cable.
There is a ton of info on this forum if you search around.
This last piece of the puzzle in getting my cable to work was finding this thread mirrored from the (inaccessible) bmwecu forum.

Here is the picture of genuine HEX+CAN USB cable. 3 pins on the edge of chip connect & INPA shows battery and ignition on (same as clone cable). I wonder if CAN interface works?
