so i made an account here on bimmerforums a long time ago and have never actually used it till now.
I have been building/competing in my e30 for about 4 years now. started off real slow but has come to light in the past year.
quick run down of the car:
89 325is, M20 turbo- 255 whp, 280ftlbs torque
schrick turbo cam, IE adjustable cam gear
Lightened flywheel, lightened crank
Mega squirt engine management
Ground controll coil overs
S50 steering rack with 3/8th inch tie rod spacers
16x9 et 10 ESM II's
4:10 locked diff
power by max hydro e-brake
other stuff that i cant think of right now.
anyways, here are some picks, some of which are kinda old:

What are your spring rates?
dirty30
02-08-2010, 08:07 PM
for steering angle i swapped in an s50 rack and put in some 3/8th inch tie rod spacers, still want to mod my knuckles though.
here is the steering angle
http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn180/daveblunt/IMG_1830.jpg
works perfect this way, the rack stops just as the tire barely touches my sway bar, but it doesnt lock in place at full lock.
i run 750 in the front and 650 in the rear spring rates, and have the rear dampening all the way soft.
sup dude
hey mang! hows your car doin?
Dominic49
02-08-2010, 08:10 PM
word i'm running a z3 1.9 rack with 9mm spacers and have just the same amount of angle. about to convert to e46 control arms so i dont rub on the sway bar any longer.

i've heard it done but havent seen it personally.
750 front and 650 rear? Really? REALLY?
stiff springs rates are soooo two years ago... now people are looking towards the rates of tarmac rally cars. stiff yet conforming. able to transfer weight and allow smoothness.
dirty30
02-08-2010, 11:24 PM
eh' they feel alright to me. i ran the IE3's before doing ground control and those were way too soft for my liking. good for street car though'

I was commenting on the front springs being really really stiff and the rear being really really soft.

For a street car. Why not run stiffer in the rear?

Yo dude!
You running FD or XDC this year? D1 is also having another US series...
dirty30
02-09-2010, 08:22 PM
ya Dogg!!!!!! im doing FD and would love to squeek in a D1 event if they do one close to home.
i Dont want to run a stiffer rear spring because i need to keep a good amount of grip.
protomor
02-09-2010, 08:25 PM
so why run that stiff in the front? that spring rate combo makes no sense to me at all. Anyone else think so or am I crazy?
dirty30
02-09-2010, 08:37 PM
i have never really thought they were that stiff. they have always just felt comfortable to me. granted, before i started drifting i wanted a good road race type set up and that spring rate combo is just what was suggested. so i used it and i havnt ever tried anything different. i want to dial it in but just have other stuff i need to pay attention to on the car.
protomor
02-09-2010, 08:40 PM
standard E30 rates are usually much higher int he rear than front. HR races are 300 front 500 rear. sports are like 200/350. It's just odd to see rates stiffer in the front than the rear.
Are you sure your rates arent 750/650 effective? that would make your rear springs 1300.
dirty30
02-09-2010, 08:48 PM
that confuses me, cause to me it doesnt make sense to have stiffer rear springs cause the load in the front of the car is so much more than the rear
protomor
02-09-2010, 09:13 PM
We have semi rear trailing arms. a 650 lb/ft spring in the rear of your car is really only the equivalent of half that at the wheel. Which is why I think you're really running 1300 as that would be 650 at the wheels. Makes much more sense to me.

damn man iv obssesd about your car to all my freinds i have a e30 that i was building in to a drift machine and now im getting rid of it cus im going to get a e36 and daily it for a while and build it to drift im just still a biginner at drifting and i was wandering if i should just stick to the e30 or stick with my plans with a e36 i was going to do a sr20 swapd e30 its totaly gutted and not really any beamer stuff left except the shell and suspension lol it needs alot of work to be drift worthy ass you can see no motor!
dirty30
03-09-2010, 11:09 PM
if i were the one starting from scratch, i would lean toward e36. just because of the level that i want my car at, if that makes sense. e30 will be cool for like a cheap fun car to slide around, but it has its limitations.
if you are planing on getting technical and trying to progress your driving and go for big power and all that, then i would go with e36.
wouldnt be too surprised if i found myself in an e36 or even e39 in the near future.

Why do you think. The e30
has it's limitations? Power wise you can swap almost any BMW
engine in there. You said
the technical side.. As in it's maneuvering capability? I'm
curious what you think, I am building a s50
forged bottom end.. And running a gtk-650 with a 666
hot side should lay down tons of power at 2500
and up!
dirty30
03-11-2010, 12:22 AM
all i was getting at was that for the guys who are not planning on doing a motor swap and going that far with it then e30's would have limitations. When you get into the little tech stuff like suspension settings and other nit picky stuff the e30 is limited. i guess all i mean is that e36 and newer have way more adjustability and way more performance options available to them.
that motor that you're getting under way will be rad though'

just curious, how come you didnt keep the factory bumpers? saying this in regard to the skirts the front bumper and the rear bumper? is it to compensate for the widebody fenders? or is it just easier to take those off when working on the car? i know a drift car doesnt have to be pretty, just asking
Roc187
03-11-2010, 10:33 AM
Oh alright, ya I'm slowly noticing how simple the e30 is... Im just worried about is the car going to e capable enough with the suspension components I'll have almost every bushing, etc replaced... What's can you suggest for that car) and btw I wasn't trying to argue with ya.. Just looking for helpful insight... Keep up te work on your car

i got the fiberglass bumpers to save weight and i also eliminated the front valence to fit my intercooler and everything more easily. and ya, zip ties make for pretty quick removal, haha

so, like some of the other guys i went FD long beach this weekend. it felt crazy to be down on that track with guys like Mad Mike right behind me. Like Tommy said, long beach is really slick. my first 3 practice runs were spin spin spin. i started to settle in, then my steering rack took a crap. so no more power steering. with that, and bad tires i transitioned wide on the last hairpin and spanked the tire wall pretty mean. took a look at the car and along with smashing up my driver side rear, i also bent the trailing arm so my tow on that one side like 2 inches out. Made the car handle super screwy.
went into qualifying with it like that. the first run was smooth but super shallow. second run was better and got to the outside clips, tapped the inside clip with my bumper going into the hairpin and looked like i was headed for the tires again, so i straightened. didnt make 32 but o well. i did what i could with the car being as weird as it was. could have been worse. looked like a couple guys wont have a car anymore from hitting the walls.
lots to learn from and lots of work to do getting the car ready again and doing a lot of cosmetic work. but cant wait till the next event, hopefully have a better outcome.

Whats your spring/sway/shock/tire combo?
Tough with those walls man. They look like theres so little room for error.
dirty30
04-13-2010, 08:30 PM
ya, the track was really narrow. my springs are 650 front, 750 rear(i had it backwards when i told you before) with koney adjustables. sways are suspension techniques and i was on nexens, wish i had changed them before but o well.
protomor
04-13-2010, 08:33 PM
And you don't have problems with snap back? I'm contemplating not running a rear sway. I'm running similar springs but softer in the front.
what size nexens?
dirty30
04-13-2010, 09:04 PM
my car is super twitchy but if i run without the rear sway i feel like there is to much roll and my car leans like a cholo. it feels good with the rear sway on the softer setting, and the dampers set pretty soft.
protomor
04-13-2010, 09:07 PM
My thought was to be like Erick in FL where he runs 650/960 with no rear sway. The sway is what gives you the snap back but the stiff rates prevent roll. Also gives you an even contact patch.
dirty30
04-13-2010, 09:09 PM
ya might be worth a try. see if i can get some extra springs and do some testing

Engine management: custom built and tuned Megasquirt computer. build and tuned by DynoTech Motorsports
suspension: ground control coil overs with coni adjustables. suspension techniques adjustable sway bars, ground control camber/caster plates.
Body: DTM fiberwerks wide body kit, fiberglass vented hood, fiberglass tunk lid

One of the major things I've noticed with the E36 is the rear suspension adjustability and the fact that it puts the power down really well. With 350hp at the wheels I have regularly set fastest entry speeds at events and almost always end up in the top3 entry speed. Thats running 235 or 245 dunlop DZ101's
