First go here select No3 and make sure you have FISTER as protocol translator.

On my page you will see the LEW is not active, I have it fitted but it does not auto detect it. You will notice if you have faults stored in any module the "!" will be replaced with a "x" next to the module:

Can anyone indicate if i can browse into these 4 sections with the engine running but without selecting any specific options? I am curious to take a look at what each of the 4 options has to offer.

Expert menu lets you manually run tests, activate and read/clear error memory for the selected module.

How do I get to this screen to get to expert mode?
Hi Abad
You cannot get to the expert screen from this menu, you will have to use the method that I described above to get to the expert screen, just follow the pictures as I showed and you will get to the correct page with the expert menu on it.

from the Gt1 program how do i get to the Protocol Translator Configuration Screen?
Hi there
I am sorry for the late reply
I do not have my computer with DIS ready to remeber exactly how to but you need to go to the admin screen, then select the touch screen calibration tab and it will ask you for a password, enter the password you used at setup which is usually 12345 and you will end up in the fister page.
Hope this helps

No, this is for fault finding and diagnoses only.

No I need a new laptop as worked ok after fresh install but thanks for taking time out to not answer the question as an expert in Linux I would have hoped you may have had a solution rather than a criticism I am sorry I am an idiot
to you but we all learn somewhere. I am trying honest.
I hoped there may have been a command prompt I had to enter to continue but seemed it was my laptop I am using playing up so think I need to buy a newer laptop before I ask silly questions again sorry if I offended in my last post am so frustrated. And can't get SSS progman to get past windows install anyone else having that problem ?

Well, I can almost get there. When I get to the DME test schedule and the screen says "Please wait..." it just sits there a long time then times out with this message. Any ideas? The rest of DIS seems to work fine. I can run other test schedules, just not the DME.

I see the exact same thing. What version of DIS are you using? How is it configured? Are you using diaghead running under windows?
There's a BMTechnic tutorial HERE (http://forums.m3cutters.co.uk/showthread.php?t=51863) which described how to get into this mode, but they make the point that they're not using the diaghead interface.
I'm using V57 with my EDIABAS.INI set to remote, thus:
453575
I'm wondering if the diaghead supports the DME access we require here, and that perhaps the DIS needs to be setup to access the USB OBD cable by some other means?

I have the same issue as the previous two posts. DIS works for most things, but when I try to access the DME, it hangs at the "please wait" and the IDENTIFICATION screen never comes up, so I can't select expert or functional test to get to the VANOS test. I'm running DIS v57 with the diag head emulator on a laptop running Win 7 Pro 64-bit. INPA and SSS seem to work fine with the same cable. DIS was able to read old faults and clear them in many different modules and the quick test runs OK. I've got Microsoft .NET framework v4.
Another clue might be that DIS reports that battery voltage is only 12 volts when the car was running and a voltmeter read 14.1 volts.
Any ideas why this one test won't come back to the next screen?

I am seeing the same issue. Any ideas?
I have all the software running (INPA, DIS v44 with FT1 and TIS). INPA brings everything up.
I had DIS set up to use Fister protocal and NOT run VM.
I have a 1998 528i (M52, E39). I use the 20 pin connector through a USB to serial interface. There is no pin 15 in the 20-pin connecter which means it is OBD, not ADS. When I try to do what Katvis did...
1. I do not get an automatic read of the car and have to do it manually. Note that INPA works fine.
2. When I click on the test schedule button, I am told there are no tests. Note that my button says "Test Plan" not "Test Schedule". What version was Katvis running? v44 or v57?
3. Somehow, (and I haven't been able to replicate it) - I did get ONCE to the Diagnosis Identification screen.
4. When I'm identifying my car, would I be the 528i_M_M52_SED, or the 528i_A_M52_SED?
Is there anyone left out there who can help? Or are they all sitting in their cars making the mirrors close and open? :-)

This has more to do with the interface you are using than the software. If DIS does not identify your car automatically, your interface is probably not detecting an ignition signal. Choose 528i_M(anual)_M52_SED or 528i_A(utomatic)_M52_SED according to your vehicle's specs.

I have the Ecutool 4-in-1 interface. Now that I know the "A" stands for automatic, my plan of attack is as follows. Remember that I have solid access to the car via INPA and I believe that I was able to get to the DME screen in my living room.
1. remove the current driver which came from the FTDI sit and load the driver on a littel 2" disk that came with the device.
2. Check activity in INPA using each of the 3 9-pin ports on the device. (The device sits between the OBD (16 or 20 pin) and the USB port. Apparently it has magical powers.
488699
3. Go back into DIS and see if I can use the #1 post here to get to the Vanos test using any of those 3 ports.
4. Do the 20-pin "ADS" (it's not really ADS since I don't have pin 15 in it) round hack of linking hole 2 with both 17 and 20 and retry INPA and DIS via the OBD port inside the car (16-pin) since that hack apparently makes it fully OBDII active.
488698
5. Ultimately buy a K-line EBIABAS cable (I have a 1998 528 and a 2006 530xi) which has both K-lines (pins 7 and 8 joined) and try it both off of the 20-pin and 16 pin (with 20-pin hack).
488701
I'll report back as I move through the steps - or if I have success eventually.l
I linked up to the car without starting INPA or DIS. I uninstalled the driver for the USB to COM(7) driver. Then I re-installed using the drivers that came on the little green disk from my Chinese bearers of grief.
I was able to talk to the car through DIS. Unfortunately, unless you have error codes there are a lot of things that you can't do. I could activate the VANOS, but not test it.
I spent all of yesterday trying to get a virtual printer working from DIS through 192.168.68.1 via a Windows UNIX Printer via a Ghostscript Printer to a final physical printer. No luck yet. I'll leave that for another time and content myself with a print screen - as soon as I figure out how to do it on this laptop without destroying DIS.
I would also like to apologize to the administrators of the forum for posting some Ebay links. It's an automatic habit of mine to document sources and I did it without thinkng. I've removed them.
Cheers.

I am finding when this happens it helps to reset the communication protocol under Admin, Calibrate Touch Screen (password is 12345), select FISTER and exit.

Is the Fister translator for everything or should you change it if you want to diagnose a car with ADS rather than OBD ?

I am experiencing the same issue as yourself and the other two posters. I guess it has to be something to do with the cable.
Did you try going into the DIS configure menu through the calibration touch panel button, selecting the Fister translator and exiting ?
David Mc

You need to use the Fister translator for everything. Bear in mind that DIS only remembers translator and protocol changes that have been made if DIS has been started without starting the IFHSrv32 as the IFHSrv32 locks the network and prevents the changes from being adopted for use in subsequent sessions. So, start DIS, make the changes, shutdown DIS using Option 0 from the configure-matic main menu, then start the IFHSrv32 and restart DIS.

I'm wondering,
I have no problem getting into Expert mode for the DMW, but do for other modules.
It almost looks like it needs to have an error you select on *that* one screen before you can choose test schedule and further.
I also noticed that on my older E36, I get a totally different menu than on my later model E36 and newer cars.
On the older menu's, I get the expert mode menu all the time for most, if not all modules.
