Picking up an 87 l6 with a bad tranny, engine runs fine...anyhow I have a transmission that is perfectly fine from an 83 633csi . Im wondering if I can swap my 83 auto tranny into the 87? Ive heard that all m30 trannys swap over however there is that little switch on the L6 ....anyhow any and all info would be appreciated
THANKS

pretty sure the transmissions are different. the 87 would have the electronic transmission.
You should be able to bolt it up no problem, but im not sure how compatible the gauge clusters are with respect to controlling the lights and what gear position you are in. Also, make sure you use the right driveshaft as the transmission lengths could be a bit off.
Im no expert on the automatics, but im sure someone will chime in that knows a bit more about the differences between the two.

Is the '83 tranny a 3 speed or a 4 speed?
What is wrong with the '87 tranny? If it is the front "A" clutch pack, it is a pretty easy fix, some info you may find interesting, including a free download of an Auto Tranny Overhaul Manual:

The rebuild with lots of pictures:

I have a 5 speed swap planned for the next month or two. When I am done I will have a spare 4hp-22 EH in excellent condition with documented service for its entire life. Problem is, I cannot guarantee when it would be available. I'd like to say amonth or two, but it could stretch out to three. Let me know if you are flexible and are interested.
