My fiance and me were going to get my boy some new shoes tonight. Getting onto the highway and shifted into 3rd, let the clutch out and hit the gas....BOOM!!! And that's when we heard the grim reaper knocking at the door. Heard a couple loud bangs, all the dash lights lit up and the engine quit. Got it towed back to my house...I knew that AAA membership would come handy. Pulled the valve cover...don't know why I already knew what happened. But, the timing chain broke. Pulled what was left of the plugs out of the head. They're trash, head is trash...hell the whole engine is trashed. 230k miles and she called a quits.

I'm trying to look on the bright side of it....which is a new engine. Bad part is all the money I have for mods is now going to buy a new engine instead.

So, what engines can I fit into my car with little modification to the car?

I don't want to have to make new motor mounts or anything like that. Something I can pretty much bolt in. Modifying the wiring is a given, so I don't mind that. I've seen people talking about installing S52. Not many people parting M3's around KC. I know where I can get a M30 here in town cheap. But, what other options do I have other than another M30

S38 is about the only other REAL option lol....Honestly, just drop another M30 in there. I'm just amazed that the timing chain broke! See lots of track time I am assuming?

That sucks. Was the engine making weird chain death rattle noises beforehand? Any warning at all?

I'd think if you were going S52, it'd be cheapest to part the 535 and start with a manual transmission'd M50 car, but I dunno.

S52 isn't really an option in a m30 e34 as the whole wiring is different and also the motor mounts IIRC it's a completely different engine to fit in the m30 e34's engine bay. S52 is only an option in M50 e34's AFAIK.

You could go s38 though, or m106 (bmw 745 turbo - that is an awesome engine! With awesome tuning options imho) m106 is basically an m30 with turbo.

Rebuild your M30 with higher comp pistons (10:1), and source another head and port it, along with a bigger cam, then tune it all with a Miller MAF & WAR chip combo

dont consider an engine conversion, keep the M30, cheapest option too

I'd just go find another M30. I am curious if there were any warning signs. I own an M30 myself (a lot younger) and would like to avoid your calamity if possible!

I would just drop in another M30. Find one that is in good shape, change out all the seals along with timing chain.

I'd be willing to be that it wasn't the chain breaking, rather the chain guides breaking. That would lead to the chain jumping time and munching everything up. Far more likely too.

M106. I may know where one is that's in good condition.

You can find M30B35's for under $700 all day long. Finding one with low mileage though is the challenge.

I think you are right. I pulled the motor today and started tearing into it to find out what actually happened. The chain guides are torn up and broken. So, I think the guides broke and the chain jumped time as well. I knew I should have replaced the guides and chain while I the head off and front of the engine apart last spring.

Im going to stick with the M30 since a friend of my dads has a '90 535 that the previous owner wrapped around a phone pole. Only things left on the car are the engine, trans and shell. So, we are going to pull the M30 out of it later this week and rebuild it.

Is that an E24 enginebay?

If I'm not mistaken, all E34 front subframes are the same part, so no native engine would need motormount fabrication to fit. The difference lies in the other bracketry in the enginebay that gets in the way of some engines, notably V8 and V12's.

It does. But, its so pretty too.

Went over and checked out the new engine. The friend of my dad is going to rebuild it for me and build it so I can add a turbo or supercharger, if one is available, later on down the road. I should have the engine in about 4-5 weeks. Normally he would have it done quicker, but since he isn't charging me for building it I have no problem waiting a little longer. He also has 4 other engines he is building right now that come first since he is getting paid for building them.

help as much as possible, to get an insight for yourself into how it all works, and the more you do to it yourself, the more appreciation you will have, plus the smug satisfaction of knowing you helped in the build of the motor

hurry up and do it already...they weigh less than the M60, have more HP and potential, theyre bullet proof, t-56's are rebuildable at a better cost...

is there a totally comprehensive writeup for the ls1 swap in an e34?

thesixerkid

Yes, it was a clusterfuck when i first got it running. There is a laundry list of wiring components to add.

Yes, its an e24. It is an M30b35 though and it makes 400whp. Can't complain about that.
