Can anyone tell me if the sunroof motor in the touring/sedan models e34s are the same. I'm inclined to believe not as the touring sunroof has additional features. can't get my Touring sunroof to close, maybe the motor is shot (tho' it was working fine few days ago).
I had to use the allen wrench to somewhat close mine on Touring, tho' its still propped up, with rear section very slightly recessed. No response at all from switch, and fuses are good:(

Try a reset. Hold the button straight up for 10 seconds, I think with the ignition on. You should hear the motors cycle at some point.
Good luck. Not fun if it's broken.

Are your motors even turning on? Or do they sound like they are grinding or struggling?

They have different numbers but this doesn't always mean they don't interchange.
The touring has two motors. PN 67 61 8 351 876

I believe that the motors are in fact different. When my sunroof failed I looked into this. However, I have not tested them. Nor do I know if you can modify the motors.

I think I have some motors and the controller for the sunroofs laying around.
I also Kay be able to get a whole sunroof assembly. But shipping would be a PITA.

Parker 731,
motor(s) aren't even operating...will try holding the switch with ignition on to see if this will completely close the roof assembly. Once I get it completely sealed shut, I will breathe easier... For now I guess based on responses there isn't a manual way to shut the roof completely...damn!:(

Have you checked the fuse? It sounds like no power is going to your motors. You would at least here a clicking noise if your motors worked.

What problem do you guys think it is if the sun roof motor is struggling, but nothing happens? It sounds terrible on mine (like the "wheel" on the motor is skipping over another on that is standing still), but i haven't had time to check/fix my problem..
Oh i can add that the e34 sedan or e32 sedan sun roof engines will not work. You can't modify it easily enough either to make it work either. The engines bolt on to place on both cars, but the "wheel" is different on the engines.

Most likely the teeth on the gears are worn down and/or the cables teeth. So when you are trying to move your sunroof the gear is trying to grip with the cable but is slipping and causing a grinding noise and therefore no sunroof movement.
If it is it this it would be a pain to fix I'm sure. You would have to get the sunroof torn apart and replace all the cables. I think the dealer sells them in the range of $30-$50. Also I dont think they sell the gears separately anymore you would have to find one from a junkyard or order a new motor which is pricey. However, the cables are most likely your problem.
A trick I found though which may help is to flip the gears upside down on the motor. Generally, it's less worn down and may help move it for when you're ready to replace the cables.

Is it dirty or sticky? Can you clean it and run it back and forth helping it along a few times? The worst thing would be for one cable to pull and the other to bind...as long as that hasn't happened maybe you could clean/lube the rails. I mean it worked right at some point since you've owned it right? I do have an entire cassette that was inoperable from the trailer project, but it's far away from the house and I have no idea what's any good. I just kept it for the panels if I couldn't get a canvas pull back at some point.

Are you hearing the grinding noise from both motors? And does it not move all together or moves then stops and starts to grind?
It could be that its dirty. But still it would have to be grabbing onto something at one point. Take a look at it. It will look dirty but the cables have little brushes between the teeth on the cables to lubricate or keep contaminants out (I never understood it). See if the teeth have been worn down by removing the motor. If you are unsure post some pictures.
Another thing you could do is manually try and crank it see if it moves then. If it doesn't I would for sure say the cables are worn down and you need to replace them.
Crazy idea but your motor could be loose. Therefore its too low to grab the lines and its just grinding. See if the bolts attaching the motor to the cassette is tight. Mine were a little loose when my sunroof stopped working.
