CPS stands for Crankshaft Position Sensor and is located on the lower right side of the engine up front, search CPS and in one of the threads there is a picture of it and where it is. It can be a bitch to unplug/plug in but is doable, some remove the intake but isnt necessary. Good luck!

What about the fuel pump relay in the fuse box under the hood? Check your electrical issues... Good luck

Check the electrical connectors down at the fuel pump and make sure there is 12v at the positive connection and a good solid ground at the negative connector. The connectors may have work loose and not making a good connection at the ground. This just happened to my 92 525ia. I too, replaced the fuel pump with a Bosch around 2004 and three months ago, the car would not start, perform test and all pointed to a bad pump. Put in a new Bosch pump using the old plug connectors at the pump, still no start. Finally tow car to Indy, who performed diagnosis and determined my new pump was defective. The indy installed another new pump and still no start. The Indy finally pin pointed the problem to a bad ground connection down at the pump, recrimped the connectors and reinstalled my pump and car started.

I'm assuming the 12v should be there whenever the key is in the on position? This seems like a good way to check that everthing else is working properly (relay, etc.) before replacing the pump.

ok, I worked on this 525i for 3 hours today. still no start. I used my 560SEL to jump the 525i off with and it cranks over just fine. I swapped out relays and rechecked fuses and even replaced a few even though they were good. I can spray starting fluid into the intake and the engine will fire up and run until the starting fluid is gone then it will die. so, I know I am getting good spark. good airflow. I can jumper the relay and I can hear the feul running and I can even hear the fuel flowing in the lines and it still wont start that way. I took the ECU out and opened the unit up and didnt find anything burnt/corroded. but that does not mean that its working though. I assume this is a fuel issue. I did notice that when the key is in the on position 2 that the CEL does not come on at all. guess its time to take it to a shop and have diagnostics run on it to find the problem. I dont know what else to do. if the CPS was faulty then it would not fire up with starting fluid. infact it wouldnt fire up at all. however, if the cam position sensor was bad that would cause a conflict with the ECU in terms of running the feul injection. so thats where I stand on this. its not getting feul through the injectors because the ECU is not getting the signal to open them or the ECU itself is faulty. I have also heard about a fuseable link somewhere in the harness that controls the ECU aswell. I will give it one more look tomorrow. any other suggestions.
