There appear to be two kinds of oilfilter for the M60. One is designed to be used by itself, has a smaller lower opening, and is apparently unavailable at random autoparts stores. The other is designed to be used with a plastic tube (PN 11421745392), has a larger lower opening, and is readily available pretty much anywhere oilfilters are. My car has the old style. I bought a new style filter and the plastic insert, and discovered that they will not fit - there appears to be no provision to actually fit this insert into the housing. RealOEM is not helpful here - the housing apparently did not change, and the insert is listed "FOR MODIFICATION ONLY", whatever that means. Any idea how to get this new style to fit?

Not sure, but the help I can offer is my m60 is 9/93. It has the center shaft. I can never find the oil filter listed for it in local stores but theres always a footnote that another one is available. I use that "later style" and just put it in. It comes with a couple copper rings that I don't use.

I encounter this issue when I was doing the 6 speed conversion three years ago. There were some discussions on the bimmerboard. I don't remember what is what now. Getting old.

I went through 3 different oil filters before I found the correct one for my car...10/93 build 530i. I have the center post....Napa carries one that works with the center post...but if I have time to order I like to get it off of Autohaus because they are only $8.

I believe the difference is the end caps of the filter...the one without the post has metal caps, and the one that works with the post has plastic end caps...IIRC

No idea on how to get the other to fit.
